We had the good fortune of connecting with Erin Doty and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Erin, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
How can I fulfill my purpose, work for myself, use my strengths, gifts and abilities, be fully myself, and provide a space for people to heal. This seemed like such an overwhelming thought.
I’ve wanted to start ShatterStress for almost 10 years. That spark inside me telling me to make that dream a reality never went away. It was always there through transitions in my life, getting a new job, going to grad school, moving to a different state. And there was always an excuse, “I’m focusing on xyz right now.”; “I don’t have enough money.”; and the biggest one that was hard to admit to myself, “I’m scared and I don’t know how.”
There has always been something missing in my jobs- poor leadership, frustration with hierarchy, not given the space to use my strengths. It finally got to a point where I realized to be truly fulfilled I had to take initiative, give myself the space, and start my business, ShatterStress. I knew I had to take the leap, and it was the hardest step. I’ve worked through the fears of “What if I fail…”; “I’m worried what others will think…” and more for those 10 years. I had to step out of my own way, and let that spark shine through.
Taking the first step was scary, and I did it. Now, my business is expanding everyday and the feeling of fulfilling my purpose is amazingly indescribable.

My vision has always been simple: create a safe, nonjudgmental space to empower people to honor and release emotions in creative ways, and break forward to a path of healing.

What should our readers know about your business?
The vision for ShatterStress has always been simple: Create a safe, nonjudgmental space to empower people to honor and release emotions, and break forward to a path of healing. ShatterStress holds two types of retreats: wellness retreats for womxn, and corporate retreats for teams. We provide a space to release emotions through creative, physical outlets, to heal what no longer serves you. One physical modality we use to relieve stress is breaking plates, this is what sets us apart. It is taboo for people to break things while upset, especially women. We believe you are allowed to express emotions how you want, and breaking plates can be one of them. It can be really satisfying to break plates, and we look at it as symbolism. When you change and heal, you break old patterns, behaviors, routines, etc. In order to heal and move forward, we have to shatter what no longer serves us, and we do that through breaking plates and other physical modalities such as yoga and meditation, all of which are extremely powerful in releasing emotion.

Additionally, I have a Masters degree in Counseling. I have dedicated my life to supporting others along their path and providing a safe place for healing. From my own experiences, I understand the environment a person needs to be able to release emotion and to heal. The idea for ShatterStress stems from feeling like I wasn’t able to express my true voice or release emotion in the ways I needed to. Because I was ‘not allowed’ to release negative emotions they built up inside me until I burst. ShatterStress Retreats are for people who haven’t been able to express their true voice or release emotion in the ways they feel right, we are breaking forward to a path of healing. We embrace vulnerability, authenticity, honoring ourselves, and healing.

The biggest challenge for me was getting out of my own way. It is so easy to get caught in negative thoughts such as, “what if this fails.” “I can’t do this.” I have no idea what I’m doing.” I’ve really had to work to catch myself in that self-talk and change my narrative. It’s not failing, it’s learning. I can do this, and I can figure out how to do things I haven’t done before. With that, I’m most proud of myself for starting this business and for handling all the challenges that have been thrown my way.

The biggest thing we want others to know is- You are allowed to express your emotions. You are safe to be authentically you.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First off, brunch at The Universal! Then, going to RiNo for all the booze. We would hit up breweries (Odell is a must), cideries, wineries (Bigsby’s Folly), and distilleries! Then going to Avanti or Linger for dinner, and dBar for dessert! Then we would go on a hike in Evergreen since it’s so close to Denver. And of course hit Forest Room 5 for a beer after a day of hiking, to still feel like we’re in nature!
While most of these things are popular to do, I think it’s about the little things outside of that. Stopping at a nearby park, seeing the amazing street art, going down an ally lit with string lights, and making random connections with others along the way.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The support I’ve gotten from friends, family, mentors, has really pushed me along and helped me open my business. Jackie for helping me to think about my why. Jared for your amazing support and insight. Without your help I wouldn’t be where I am with my business today. Jessica, Kertesha, Elise, Hannah for the constant uplift and encouragement, and for helping me brainstorm and bounce ideas off of you.
My parents for their unconditional support.
These people believe in me when I don’t! Most of these people have also started their own businesses and it’s been such a help to hear their experiences, what they’ve learned, and learn from them.
