We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Bywater and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve always had a passion for business and entrepreneurship. Ten years ago, while working at a startup accelerator here in Boulder, I remember stating the words “I love startups, but I’m not the idea person. I’m the support for the idea person.” With that in mind, I set out to support startups in their growth to profitability. I’ve spent the last five years of my career at a startup fighting climate change. I’ve helped grow this company from 13 employees to 50, expanding across the entire United States and through multiple rounds of venture capital funding. But, with all of the success I’ve seen at this startup, there’s another side to my story – my path to healing. I experienced quite a bit of childhood trauma and grief that led to trauma induced emotional and addictive tendencies. I spent my early twenties partying, hurting others and hurting myself in an attempt to escape my painful reality. Then, about three years ago, I found breathwork. Breathwork allowed me to work through my trauma and grief, healing my emotional and addictive tendencies along the way. Breathwork gave me my life back, and opened my heart to possibilities I never knew existed within myself. I’ve healed myself and climbed my way out of some of the darkest of places, so I believe it is my responsibility to bring this healing work to others. There is so much healing needed in our world right now, and I believe healing happens one person at a time, one breath at a time. This is how I became “the idea person” founding Esoteric Therapeutic, where my purpose is to empower women to heal their hearts, reduce depression and anxiety, and open to all of the beauty this life can offer.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Esoteric Therapeutic was founded to empower you to reawaken your self-love, reduce depression and anxiety, and heal past traumas that are holding you back from living your brightest life. I created this business to help others out of the darkness that I was once in. I’ve found healing and thus, it is my responsibility to bring this healing to others. My journey has certainly not been easy, for I had to experience the darkness for this business to bloom. But, once I made the decision to launch Esoteric Therapeutic, my life has been entirely in flow. Esoteric Therapeutic has brought abundance into my life and healing into the lives of others. That is the greatest lesson I’ve learned — focus on giving to others, and the money will come. Put your heart on your sleeve and give everything you have away – the universe will reward you infinitely. I began ruminating on Esoteric Therapeutic four years ago and pivoted countless times before launching this September. In Esoteric Therapeutic’s current incarnation, I provide healing from trauma through 1:1 Biodynamic Breathwork sessions and group Biodynamic Breathwork sessions. I’m also developing a product line of chakra candles and self-love toolkits that will supplement your healing. This November, I’m launching Breathe for Humanity – group breathwork sessions where a portion of the proceeds will be donated to healing causes such as suicide prevention, Black Lives Matter, spreading awareness on depression and anxiety and many others. Heal yourself, heal the world. Eventually, once the COVID-19 pandemic comes to an end, I plan to host in-person breathwork retreats around the world. All of this to say, the lesson is this: breathe it all in, then give it all away. The possibilities are endless when your focus is selfless.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Boulder, CO. A day in the Boulder life would look like this: 7am – Coffee at Boxcar on Pearl St. 8am – Hike Mt. Sanitas 11:30am – Lunch at Leaf on Pearl St. 1pm – Yoga at Yoga Pod 3pm – Massage at Somadi Mind & Body 5pm – Drinks at Rosetta Hall 7pm – Dinner at Avanti
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate my success to Cathy Heller and the Made To Do This September 2020 cohort. Cathy Heller is an incredible success coach who helped me take the leap into starting my own business, leave my limiting beliefs behind, and ultimately summon the power to believe in myself. Cathy created Made To Do This, a 12 week program to help heart-led entrepreneurs launch their businesses, and I also dedicate my success to the wonderful souls in this program who lift each other up every single day. I wouldn’t be here without any of you. With so much gratitude and love, thank you.
