We had the good fortune of connecting with Linds McAlpine and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Linds, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I opened Reverence Brewing Company in 2021 with my partner Nate after nine years of traveling throughout the United States + Canada pursuing this dream of opening our own brewery. We took risk after risk, moving our family from place to place, gaining the skills that we needed to open Reverence. Admittedly, the brewing industry pays low wages for its brewery employees so while I was staying at home raising our babies, it was challenging to make ends meet financially. However, having the perspective of abundance is helpful with risk taking. I knew that a path was being unveiled when opportunities were arising for us + if anything, moving from coast to coast would be a great adventure! I also think that taking risks depends on an ability to trust that you are worthy of success. Once I allowed myself to let go of the fear of failing, I understood that everyone else is just throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks. Why can’t I?
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Reverence Brewing Company is a neighborhood brewery for all ages, races, genders + lovers. While this is our tagline, it is also the embodiment of our energy in the taproom. We offer craft soda for those who don’t drink and ensure that everyone’s safety + comfort is our top priority. Nate makes amazing beer that suit all tastes and we offer samplers (of your choice!) and cans + growlers to-go. We took the leap in opening the business with little business experience but a ton of taproom + brewery knowledge. I wrote an in-depth business plan that was extremely helpful in beginning the steps of crafting + opening the business. We hired an attorney + an accountant and through our loan from the Colorado Enterprise Fund, we were offered a bookkeeper at no cost to teach Quickbooks to me. Otherwise, I learned different programs, tried things out and got better at those things! For example, I bought Adobe Illustrator, watched videos and attempted to make posters, instagram posts + the like. I eventually got better and can now bust out a poster pretty darn quickly. While it may not be perfect, it doesn’t have to be! We sell beer, not posters! The support I feel in running this business when I let go of others’ judgment has been amazing. When I am authentically myself, I feel others can be their authentic selves + the business has thrived.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hmmm…this is an interesting question. I moved to Colorado one year before I opened Reverence Brewing Company. That first year was spent homeschooling + exploring the woods in and around Boulder with my kids and close friends. It was the time of full covid restrictions so going out, etc. wasn’t part of my experience. When 2021 rolled around, we opened the brewery and I have been consumed with work + kids! So this would be my dream week with my bestie: We would grab some Reverence beer + head out to the mountains for a few nights of hiking + soaking in hot springs. We’d head over to Telluride for some music and then back to Denver for a show at Red Rocks. We’d wake up on her last day here to go to the Corner Beet for breakfast, a yoga class at Samadhi and a walk around Cheeseman + City Park. There are so many great spots in Denver that I would leave it up to the wind for dinner + drinks.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Wow. There are so many people I’d like to thank!! I’ll stick with the closest to our hearts: our parents. Nate + I are so fortunate that our parents stuck by our side + believed in us along the way. From accepting merch from whatever brewery Nate was working for as Christmas presents to being a landing spot to rest in between gigs, they have all supported us in this dream. Thanks to Diane + Gary Johnson, Diana McAlpine + Mike McAlpine. You all rock ❤️
