We had the good fortune of connecting with Amanda Van Orden and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amanda, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ve had a lot of office jobs that left me feeling like an empty shell of a human. It might sound cliche – but I pursued a creative career because it makes me happy! I’m a creative person, and I need to express that somehow. Not only is photography a great creative outlet, but I get to connect with the most amazing people.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I specialize in minimalist, natural newborn photography. When people think of newborn photography they often picture babies in buckets and flower crowns on colorful backdrops. There’s nothing wrong with that style at all, but I take a more natural and simple approach to photographing babies.
My newborn photos are clean, simple, and intimate. My focus is always on the baby and family, not the setup. I focus every image on baby’s tiny features and the loving connection within the family! Clients walk away with a gallery full of images that capture all of the sweetness and emotion of welcoming a new baby to the world.
It has been a long road to discovering my style and finding my unique voice. My style isn’t for everybody, although I wish I could take pictures of every baby in the world! But I’m finally in a place where I love what I do and the images I produce.
I want future clients to know that a newborn session doesn’t have to be stressful, and it doesn’t have to take 4 hours. Whether baby is asleep or awake, wants to be held the whole time or is happy to sleep on my comfy posing bag – you can have beautiful newborn photos to treasure forever.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I could honestly spend a week exploring Old Town and eating at all of the amazing brunch spots in the downtown area. The Silver Grill, Snooze, Lucille’s, The Rainbow – we are truly spoiled in the breakfast food department.
I love tubing the Poudre river, catching an outdoor movie at the Lyric or the drive-in, and hiking in the foothills.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Busath Photography in SLC, Utah! They gave me my first job in the photography industry when I knew absolutely nothing and gave me an incredible foundation. They took a chance on me, and to this day it’s the best place I’ve ever worked. My family for believing in me and always being willing to sit for test shoots when I have a new idea.
And every client who trusts me to capture the most important moments of life! It’s thanks to you that I get to do what I love.
