We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Trope and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lisa, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I decided to start a business because I personally spent years suffering through figuring out how to feel better in my body and mind. I spent years struggling and playing guessing games at how I could improve my mental health and spent most of my twenties on both an anti-depressant and medication for ADD. I am fully supportive of medication when it is the right avenue to support someone with their mental health.
However, on my journey, I was convinced that I had a chemical in balance in my brain and that taking medication was the only solution to healing. It wasn’t until I decided to get off these anti-depressants that I realized that I didn’t have a chemical imbalance and instead much of my struggle with both anxiety and depression was coming down to a deep lack of embodiment and severe nervous system dysregulation.
We shouldn’t have to suffer through figuring out how to feel better in our bodies and minds. My healing journey has been intertwined with some powerful healing modalities, learnings, and time disconnecting from stimulus by being in nature, which began to change everything for me.
This is why I decided to found Rising Moon Collective. I started with teaching breath work and yoga and then dove much deeper through facilitating an embodied dance class and sharing my learnings while currently studying Somatic Experiencing and Dynamic Attachment Repatterning Experiencing (DARe). Each one of these experiences and modalities taught me self-trust, began to rewire my untrue beliefs about myself, gave me more energy, and allowed for embodiment and nervous system regulation I didn’t realize was possible. A future dream will also be to interweave the outdoors into my business- working with embodiment and presence on hiking and backpacking trips.
I went from taking two antidepressants a day and masking my pain to beginning to feel more present, happy, and content day-to-day.
I am on a continued journey towards more regulation and embodiment to move towards the most whole and happy version of myself and I want to support others in doing the same.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am excited to continue to share the much-needed narrative that trauma is healed through the body. That for many people working with the nervous system could make a massive difference in moving towards a more present, content, and joy-filled life. Working with the mind and speaking about our past and our present is very important and the validation and support from sharing with someone we trust can be powerful. However, in my experience, it wasn’t until I moved into the body that I saw much deeper levels of healing.
A challenge to overcome has been figuring out the balance of sharing what I am learning while also respecting my boundaries with social media and my nervous system. It isn’t talked about often that posting publicly to large platforms can be very stress inducing. I am learning how to be more public on my platform, while also not overriding my body when it asks me to stop or pause.
I think I would want “the world” to know that I have been through it and am working on coming out the other side. I am not launching a business focused on embodiment and mental health because I have read about it or listened to a podcast. I have struggled with anxiety and depression for the entirety of my adult life and know deeply what it feels like to work with it day to day. This is what I really hope to bring to people; the deep understanding and compassion that comes with having the lived experience and the experience of beginning to heal.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would most likely start in River North District in Denver at Stem Cider and wander down the alleyway to see the beautiful murals of local artist. This would eventually lead us to Improper City for food and possibly games.
I would want to bring them on a hike where we could see incredible Colorado views, without the crowds and then try to find some time to go to hot springs—Mount Princeton, Cottonwood Hot Springs or Sulphur Springs are always good options. I would end the trip with spending some time at some of the best spots in Denver either on South Broadway or Colfax for a night out of dancing.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to thank many of my friends and family who deeply believe in my success. They have encouraged me every step of the way.
I am also incredibly grateful to my Somatic Experiencing Practitioner who has helped me become more embodied and alive. As well as to the work of Peter Levine who is the founder of Somatic Experiencing (SE) International and the work of Diane Poole Heller with the founding of DARe (Dynamic Attachment Repatterning Experience) . Somatic Experiencing and DARe has drastically changed my life for the better and made me realize for my circumstances that my mental health didn’t only have to be managed but could be healed. This is why I am excited to bring more knowledge about Somatic Experiencing and DARe into the world.
