We had the good fortune of connecting with Tim Hilley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tim, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I aim for excellence. Personal Training is a job where you never stop learning. There are niches, broad spectrums, camp modalities… and a great Personal Trainer will research and use all of them. People like me have dedicated their entire lives to the theory and application of bettering the human body both physically and psychologically. Staying up to date on new sciences and methods is essential for staying ahead in the service we give our clients.
While knowledge is highly important in this field, I also have very in-tuned customer service skills. I am personable, I make my clients know that when we are in session: My entire attention is on them. Throughout the week between sessions, we communicate about encouragement, dedication, support when it’s hard, and praising the wins when we have succeeded. Empowerment, Trust, and having someone to talk to about your personal journey in fitness and health goes a long way.
Lastly, I am quite the nerd. I went to college for software engineering and web design. My clients have reported that following my programs is incredibly easy due to the app that my business uses. With video tutorials, in-app progress tracking, and day to day planning + nutrition (recipes have videos too!), anyone could follow my programs.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I get to help people. I get to help people that think all hope is lost and think that they are an alien. That they are just “fat people” and nothing works on them and they should just give up.
I get to help someone love themself again no matter what stage of health they are at through body image empowerment.
I get to take away people’s pain for them through corrective exercise tactics that have had chronic pain for decades.
I get to help people live longer. LIVE LONGER! That’s amazing once you say it out loud.
I love my job. I get to see the smiles of my clients every time they have a win. And I am there when they need a little nudge in the right direction.
It’s not about the money. Don’t get me wrong, I do need to make a living, but id rather help 1 million people for one dollar than help 1 person for a million dollars.
It was hard working up to the level of Personal Trainer that I am today. A lot of people skew this field for marketing gain and give out false information because it sells and is “sexy” when they really have no idea what they are talking about. I built this business to help people that are in the dark about what to do (or have been misinformed) on how to actually have a healthy and fit lifestyle and body.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, first I would bring them to Mt. Cutler at 7 am. That hike is one of the best hikes I’ve been on since I moved here. We would hike for approximately 90 minutes, take some nice pictures, and then head to Tomo Sushi. That place is literally heaven. It is the best sushi I have ever had in my entire life (and their sake is cheap too ;D). After a good morning hike and a belly full of sushi we would go to the mall up north, pick out some clothes and get ready for a red rocks amphitheater event (preferably comedy). After the show, grilling some steaks, peppers, and potatoes on the back porch sounds like a perfect ending. (This is a real story with my brother)
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The guys at MindPump in California are to thank here. I would not be the professional that I am today without listening to their podcasts almost every single day. They have guided me as mentors unknowingly from California for approximately 5 years now. Listening to them speak about fitness and health made me think that all of this was possible in the first place. So thankyou Sal, Adam, Justin, and Doug. yall don’t know me, but you’ve helped me and thousands of others with the work that you do.
