Meet Sam Braverman | Photographer, Adventurer, Professional Engineer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sam Braverman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sam, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
The things that make me happiest are generally any activity that gets me out in nature. And sharing those experiences with my wife and kids increases the joy I derive from them exponentially. Of course I also enjoy capturing images from those moments and experiences as well that I can then revisit later on. I have a huge catalog of pictures of my kids that I generally don’t share much of, but I often browse through.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I focus mostly on landscape photography and strive to capture images that really communicate the feeling of a moment in space and time. To set myself apart, I also like to incorporate my love of outdoor adventuring. I like to get to remote places that are less photographed than some of the more accessible places. I have hauled my heavy full frame camera, lenses, and tripod many miles into remote locations – many times questioning my decision to carry so much weight for many miles and many vertical feet.
I got to where I am today professionally (which arguably isn’t that far really) through hard work and dedication. I have always been drawn to photography, and I started practicing and learning as much as I could about the art form. I took classes, read books, practiced constantly, and sought out opportunities to showcase my work. It wasn’t always easy, as the field is highly competitive, but I persevered and continued to improve my skills and develop my own style.
Along the way, I have learned many valuable lessons, including the importance of staying true to my artistic vision, the value of networking and collaborating with other artists, and the importance of constantly learning and staying current with new techniques and technologies.
Ultimately, I want the world to know that I am a dedicated and passionate artist, committed to capturing and showcasing the beauty of the natural world through my work. I hope that my photographs can inspire others to appreciate and protect the environment, and to see the world through a new and more beautiful lens.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We absolutely love northern Colorado and I always take visitors to some of my favorite craft breweries (of which there are many). Verboten in Loveland is always a must! One of my absolute favorite places in northern Colorado is Mishawaka – an incredible venue for live music, food, and drinks just northwest of Fort Collins right on the Poudre River. During the summer, there are always white water kayakers and rafters pulling up and stopping by for a drink which makes it such a unique place. I also love to stop there for beers after a day of backcountry skiing/split-boarding up at Cameron Pass.
Of course, I also love to take visitors on adventures in the mountains. Some of my favorite spots are Cameron Pass and Rocky Mountain National Park. I’ve learned over time to properly adjust and cater the difficulty of these adventures for the specific visitor (some have been less than thrilled when I’ve pushed it a little too hard).

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my wife, Marjie, who is the real artist of our family. While I hope that someday I can make photography my full-time job, right now it is just my “side hustle”. I have been taking photos for years and have a catalog with thousands of images, but it was thanks to encouragement from my wife that I really started putting my work out there.
