Meet Hana Felix | Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Hana Felix and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hana, why did you pursue a creative career?
Pursuing a career in art is a relatively novel idea for me. Though I’ve been creating my entire life, it was never introduced as a viable option in terms of making a living. I was laid off from my corporate job at the beginning of Covid, and found myself with a lot more free time than I was used to. I dumped basically all of it into drawing and painting. Selling my art started out with friends asking for commissions and prints, and it grew from there. I started doing art and craft markets this year, and began thinking for the first time that this could be something bigger than a side income. Art is the only thing that has really clicked for me beyond just being a job or a paycheck – it’s the first thing I’ve done where I’ve felt like, “Ok, this is what I’m supposed to do with my life.”

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art has transformed a lot over the past few years. I started out doing mainly linework drawing, and now do landscape painting almost exclusively. It’s taken a lot of trial and error to find out what works for me, and what weaknesses I need to work on. As a self taught artist, it’s been challenging to overcome the idea that I’m not a “real” artist since I didn’t go to art school. I know a lot of people struggle with that feeling, especially when they need another job to support their art career. I want people to feel allowed to create art – you draw, paint, sing, dance, and just create what you want to create – that makes you an artist!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
You can’t have a trip to Colorado without enjoying the mountain playground! The perfect day is grabbing a breakfast burrito and Bonfire Burritos, taking a day hike or getting on some climbs in Clear Creek, and finishing up the day at one of the local breweries. We live in Golden, and love to head to Mountain Toad for a beer and a bite at whatever food truck they have for the night.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Fiancé has been my biggest cheerleader throughout this journey. He has been there through every scrapped painting, early morning show set up, and “what am I doing with my life” moment. He’s my biggest fan. I wouldn’t be able to pursue art as fully without him!
