We had the good fortune of connecting with Amber Sullivan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amber, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
10 years ago I used to teach high school science. This was before my first baby was born. I then decided to change and stay at home with my new baby to be able to be with her full-time. This was when I decided to pick up a camera and learn how it works. I have since then had two more little babies, all two years apart. I loved being a stay-at-home mom and knew I didn’t want to return to my typical 9-5 teaching job but was wanting to do something more. So I turned my little hobby into a business. Being a photographer and my own boss let me decide my own hours. It allowed me to work as little or as much as I wanted. With little ones at home, sometimes that proved to be a little more difficult. As they got older, I could work a little more but I was still there for my family and it never interfered. I love how photography and having a studio in my own home have allowed me to keep an excellent work-life balance.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
One of the best things about being a photographer is the ability to be creative with what you want the end product to look like. In the beginning, I photographed anything and everything just to get a business started. I would get really burnt out on doing things I didn’t enjoy. I learned that in order to continue, I would need to focus solely on one type of photography. My favorite was maternity and newborns. I did everything from workshops to in-person mentorships with photographers to learn everything I could about being a great newborn photographer. Every year I would improve my skills and learn something new. I am continuously learning and improving.

What sets me apart from others is my love to create unique beautiful pieces of art for the families I serve and get to print them on heirloom quality art. I get to know the families first before they decide to book. I make sure their vision matches my style and I can create what they are looking for. I help with wardrobe (I also have a client closet full of dresses for moms and little girls), backdrop choices, and color themes. During the session, I know how to pose the families for the best photographic results. Once the session is over, I help each family go through their photos and offer my expertise on choosing what type of heirloom piece will fit with their lifestyle and home. I make sure they are getting the best of the best. I love what I do and enjoy getting to see my creations come to life on canvases or in beautifully crafted albums that I know will be passed down for generations in families.

I am here to make sure you aren’t stressing about what to wear for your photoshoot. How things will go, and when you are going to have time to get things printed. I have done all the research for you and have found the best quality products that will fit in most homes. If you are wanting a stress-free photo session with someone who will take care of you every step of the way to make sure you walk away with what you absolutely love, I am your person!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We love to travel into the mountains so that would be a must on our trip. Breckenridge, Granby, and Estes Park are some of my favorite places to visit no matter the time of year. We frequent breweries here as well, so there are a few that we would definitely have to stop at. Timnath Beerworks, Peculiar in Windsor, Sweetwater Brewing Co. are some of our favorites. Stop at Scheel’s for some fun and shopping.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family and peers helped me get to where I am now. My husband above all believed in me and gave me the help I needed to get everything started and continues to support me. I am also part of a great photography community that was always willing to help. The photography community here in Colorado is pretty awesome and always willing to help new photographers grow. It allowed me to find what I really wanted to do with photography and they pointed me in the right direction for growing in my niche and as a business.
