We had the good fortune of connecting with Cyndi Marlowe and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cyndi, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
The End Goal: Every Picture Tells a Story
In 1971 Rod Stewart released his album “Every Picture Tells a Story”. You could hear it endlessly playing on turntables through the halls of my dorm at Ohio State University. I was a fine arts major. My art super power was and still is framing images in my mind.
The ability to instantly see an image translated well into a long career as an interior designer. I began my design career well before computers and CAD programs. I had to be proficient at getting my visions across to my clients in a sample board and a well drawn floor plan. My best designs were those that honestly reflected my clients’ interests. Rooms became big canvases. All of the components had to sync perfectly to complete the image I saw in my mind and reflect the story of the client.
In 1980, I made my first trip west of the Mississippi. Colorado revealed a massive canvas. I remember constantly thinking ” I feel like I’m in a postcard”. Always with a camera, always dropping off cans of film at the local Photo House.
I bought an art gallery, sold other photographers’ work, continued to do interior design and occasionally would show an image from a recent hike or cross country ski trip to a friend. One friend’s response to one of my photos still runs through my mind over 40 years later. “This is a good image, but every picture needs to tell a story”.
As I enter my 70th year, my focus is on landscape images. I live within so much beauty. This is where I wanted to be at this stage in my career. I do mostly large canvas pieces. Bringing an image I see on a ridge line into someone’s home is like creating a window into another part of the landscape. I’ve been fortunate to have my art in high end hotels, condominium complexes and private residences.
This is my dream come true. Grateful to share my story.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
That photography is my passion. Wonderful way to live life.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hiking, biking, skiing, all through incredible scenery. Steamboat Springs is such a vibrant art community. So much to share!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
