We had the good fortune of connecting with Alistair M. Hawkes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alistair M., do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” ~Margaret Mead

I believe this quote speaks for itself, and what is means to me is that as I work with individuals and groups each one of those individuals and groups becomes empowered to create real change within, which translates into change in the world. I love seeing my clients and students build on what they learn from me and from the HIKE team to systematically install flexible and healthy patterns of self-development, self-regulation and self-mastery in their lives and in the world. We are continually striving to help others grow in awareness, and to encourage them to set intentions that are helpful and evolutionary for themselves, their communities, our beautiful planet, and ultimately the Universe.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a somatic-focused, clinically trained licensed professional counselor who comes to teaching and educating others through an interesting life journey. I was raised with the understanding of the body/mind connection, was taught to meditate when I was 12 years old, and worked as an administrator for a non-profit organization called the International Society for the Study of Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine (ISSSEEM). During my time at ISSSEEM (1989-1999) I was steeped in scientific discourse in the role consciousness plays in health and healing. I met HIKE founder, Liana Mattulich, MD (Argentina) at the ISSSEEM conference in 1992 where she encouraged me at that time to adopt some basic HIKE practices in my life on a daily basis. I was inspired by ISSSEEM and the subjects we were discussing there to return to school and earn a master’s degree in Somatic Counseling Psychology at Naropa University. Following Naropa I made my way through the community mental health system where I finally landed in a professional position called Prevention Specialist in Social Emotional Learning where I had the divine privilege of teaching self-management to elementary school students in public school settings. Working as a Prevention Specialist with children inspired me to realize that the education of humanity requires that we have awareness of ourselves on multiple levels (emotional, intellectual, physical, energetic) in order to be functioning optimally. While I continue to teach clients and students the basic principles of self-regulation and self-mastery in my private practice, over the past few years I have branched out into the community. Along with my brother, Dallas R. Hawkes, MS – HIKE Global Coordinator, we are teaching larger groups of people problem-solving, personal-development, leadership, and self-mastery with the principles and practices as taught in the HIKE4evolution system. The HIKE4evolution system is offered as a solution to the everyday ordinary and extraordinary challenges people are facing during these incredibly interesting times. With the small time investment of 7 minutes per day, everyone can evolve into all they want to BE.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Our itinerary starts with a hike in Golden (my hometown) at White Ranch park, and then lunch at the Buffalo Rose – this little gem was recently overhauled and is now a modern restaurant where one can hear live music on a regular basis. Following the Buffalo Rose we head to the top of Mt. Zion (the mountain with the “M” on it) for some city lights and star gazing.

Day two we begin with brunch at Rupert’s on the Edge, a walk around Sloans Lake (almost 3 miles), and a trip to Union Station downtown Denver for some people watching, and ending with dinner at The Buckhorn Exchange.

Day three we drive to Granby and enjoy the beautiful mountain views and a visit to Hot Sulphur Spring for some R & R for a couple days of peace and quiet.

Day 6 we do yoga at Red Rocks, see the amphitheater, have lunch at MacNation in Indian Hills nearby and give thanks for all the beauty and resource that Colorado has to offer. We hike at Dinasaur Ridge that afternoon, and have dinner at The Fort.

In previous seasons of my life we might have included live music at The Bluebird Theatre, The Fillmore, or The Ogden, and/or country western dancing at the Grizzly Rose.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Liana Mattulich, MD (Argentina), is responsible for the system I teach called Human Inner Keys for Evolution (HIKE) which was developed over her lifetime as a medical professional and neuroscientist for evolution. Her individual work discovering her own personal Inner Keys (unique and individual internal markers for different qualities of awareness) produced a series of repeatable formulas that when taught to others enable people to discover their own inner Keys which then become useful maps they can use to navigate life in healthy, happy, and efficient ways. She tirelessly works toward the universal goal of the manifestation of peace on our planet and in our Universe through her personal intention and daily meditations, her prolific scientific writings, and her biofeedback/neurofeedback mentorship of a core group of long-standing students. Her lifelong work is immeasurably helpful to me both personally, and professionally. I am forever indebted to her and the HIKE system.
