We had the good fortune of connecting with Heather Macias and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heather, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I have been a massage therapist for 11 years now and for the first 9 years I worked for 3 different spas, they were great experiences and learning lessons. Through out my time working for 3 different companies I was able to grow who I was as a massage therapist, become more knowledgeable, better with verbiage, more confident and stronger with time. The last company I was working for I became the Supervisor for the massage department for two locations, yes it was a bit tough but I felt happy helping and teaching others being the face and voice for the massage department. Worked through a lot of challenges such as covid. Working to make sure all sanitization protocols were up to date, rules were being followed and helping keep everyone updated. During this time I was also a massage therapist and that was my me time, the time for me to do what I do best. In 2021 I had a major set back with my mom becoming very sick. I still balanced work and taking care of her as well, when I needed to do what was best and time off to be with her it showed the true colors of working for those who said they cared did not. Asking me to work while I was by my mothers bedside while she was actively passing, doing me best to give my love and care during a service was hard, after my mother had past questions why I wasn’t;t back to normal. Makes me sad and sick thinking of that. My Supervisor position was terminated in the new year because i was quote “to unavailable and with everything going on in my life it was best in the company to let me go”. I couldn’t be there anymore, not with that lingering over my head. My mom was my biggest supporter, my number one fan. She helped me out with massage school, helped me with my hands on homework and so much more. She was always so proud of me and my accomplishments. She was everything to me. so knowing how proud she would be of me going on my own I thought why not take a huge step. August 2022 I opened my own business. Prairie Moon Massage is the name and the meaning behind it bring light and happiness to others when i share. Prairie Moon is a flower in the peony family, my mom loved peonies. The meaning and symbolization for peonies just fits my massage practice and who I am and who she was. Every time I go to work I am happy I am doing what I love to do, I’m helping my clients and I am able to connect with them and work with them. I love helping and showing care to those who lay on my massage table.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I love to say that all massage therapist are different, even if we have had the same education our techniques are different. I truly love helping and caring for others during my work. The best way to explain my work is I can connect with my clients in a such a way that I can bring calm, peace and relaxation just by placing my hands on them during the opening of the massage.
I am where i am today with help and support for friends and family, while it was a challenge because I was so new to this I was able to ask questions and receive answers that were supportive and also true no bs.
Working for other companies showed and taught me what to do and what not to do. Show care and compassion to others because you don’t know what someone is gong through.
The driving factor behind my decision is my passion for helping people. My mother, my biggest supporter and number one fan, taught me to be kind and caring to others. That care and love comes from my heart and is sent through my hands when I work on my clients. I find my career as a massage therapist to be quite fulfilling as I help my clients feel happier, more relaxed, and in a better mindset by the time they leave my room. Seeing this change in the people I work on puts joy into my heart.
The love and care that I put into every session shows, and it’s something that will never go away. In addition, I enjoy getting to know my clients and being able to connect with them in so many ways. Even if we don’t say much during a session, I still feel a connection to my clients, and I enjoy seeing them on my books again.
My journey of healing, growing, and continuing to learn has had such a heartfelt impact on my life and career. I am grateful for the gifts that I have been given and the skills that I have worked hard to develop, and I am passionate about sharing my expertise with those who come into my practice
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well thats the best thing is my best ever ever friend (beef lol) lives close by so we do many fun things together when our schedules allows. We love to grab coffee and we like to change it up once in a while and not always go to the same place even though it is nice when the baristas know your order as soon as we walk through the door. Creme was first place we would always go, its still there and has grown so much it nice to re live good memories. We like to do stay vacations even if that is going up to Boulder, Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs, Down Town to see some art or to juts walk around with our dogs. Our most recent place we like to go to for some quite and to sit down and chat is Golden, the Golden Mill is very delicious and fun with the open outdoor seating and food plus the view is beautiful.
Our next adventures will be a road trip to Portland an then out of the country.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Of course my mom, she was such well I should say she is very proud of me even though she is no longer with us. My husband Nick who has been my biggest support. My Dad and my brother. Thank you to my friends who have supported me and helped me get through the rough patches, they reminded me that things take time.
