We had the good fortune of connecting with Hannah Wright and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hannah, what do you want your legacy to be?
I work a lot on things that I’m proud of, things that I hope will last, but working on stories that exist as podcasts on the internet is inherently ephemeral. I’m prouder of the friends I’ve made, the people I’ve managed to help and support with my work, than I am proud of anything I’ve ever written. If people remember me, I want it to be because I have been kind. The rest doesn’t matter as much.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve always been a storyteller, but the traditional ways of getting stories out there–books, blogs, magazines, video–have huge barriers to entry or are solitary endeavors, or they’re both. When I heard my first audio drama, it was an absolute revelation. Not only was it an easier way to tell a story cheaply, there was a thriving and beautiful community that was ready to welcome me right in.

It hasn’t been easy. Podcasting isn’t profitable, and that goes double for audio drama. I still have my day job to feed myself and fund my work, and that’s okay, because even if creative work is still work, I’m happy to do it for fun.

I don’t know that what I do is unique or special, but I do know that I am proud of Inn Between and Re: Dracula and Joy to the World. I love having the privilege to tell stories this way with these people. I love the work I get to do.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
To eat we’d definitely go to my local Italian deli and carniceria. Nothing tastes better than a recipe that’s been refined over decades, and these places are institutions. We would definitely go do some hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park, or El Dorado Canyon State Park. Meow Wolf is always fun, and there’s also the Night Market in Sun Valley! This city is home, and my home is bountiful.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to shout out the incredibly supportive and kindhearted audio drama community. Creators like Tal Minear, Stephen Indrisano, Amy Giacomucci, Cole Burkhardt, Caroline Mincks, C.S.W., Pacific S. Obadiah, Nick Prufer, Mason Amadeus, Brooke Jennett, and so many others are the reason I keep telling stories. I love you guys.
