We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelsey Boucher and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelsey, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting my own cookie business was almost an afterthought. I had already found my passion for decorating cookies a couple of years before. Many family and friends asked if I had thought about turning my hobby into a business. It hadn’t really crossed my mind, but it was a very attractive idea given I was already at home with my kids. After my family and I moved to Colorado, I decided to take the plunge! I didn’t know if the business would be successful, but as I continue to take orders I’ve grown more confident in my little company. It was tough and scary at times, but I love this job so much that it almost doesn’t feel like work!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Well, I opened Sweet Peak Cookie Co. on January 1st, 2023 as a creative outlet while caring for my kids at home. I have a proprietary cookie recipe with a secret ingredient which results in a soft, buttery sugar cookie. My royal icing is just as soft as the cookie! I love making cookies for any event and working with my clients to make their custom cookie dreams come true. It is their special event, I’m just there to make it a little sweeter! When they buy from me, they are helping this little business of mine grow and supporting a tired mom who needs a creative outlet.
It’s funny, I actually started my professional career in accounting. While that degree definitely helps on the business side of things, the day to day work is completely different. Most things are black and white in accounting, but the creative in me needed a whole rainbow to thrive. Seeing the designs in my head come to life never ceases to amaze me. Starting this dream definitely had some bumps in the road, but through the love and support of my family, I’ve been able to learn, grow, and take on more orders than I ever thought possible. My biggest lesson learned is that good things take time. When I first launched, I was worried about not getting many orders. I was a little disheartened, but I persisted in posting practice sets on my IG account. Within 4-5 months, everything changed. I was almost completely at capacity in May! It’s wild to think in such a short time I’ve grown so much and have met the best clients ever!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It definitely depends on the season! In the warmer months, I’m all about hiking. There would definitely be a day trip to Rocky Mountain National Park, Garden of the Gods and maybe a concert at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. I love going to Rockies’ baseball games and the rooftop bar at Linger before ending the day with ice cream from Little Man Ice Cream. If we need to stay indoors then the Denver Art Museum is on the list as well as a Nuggets game, lunch at Leven Deli and drinks at Death and Co. Shopping at Cherry Creek, a visit to Meow Wolf and grabbing drinks at Union Station is always a fun way to spend a day.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be anywhere I am today in this business without my loving husband, Evan, and my sister-in-law, Madi. Starting a business takes a lot of time and energy, both physically and mentally. With two small kids at home, it was hard to find the time to work on sample cookie sets, my website, and building the supplies I needed to make my job easier. There was so much work to even open my order form! Both Evan and Madi have been there every step of the way, giving advice, watching the rambunctious toddlers, and lifting me up when I had self doubt. Without their support, Sweet Peak Cookie Co. would probably not exist. I am thankful every day for having them in my life!
