We had the good fortune of connecting with Liz Bergstrom and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Liz, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve always known that I wanted to start my own photography business- It was really important for me to have something to reflect myself and my values without anyone else dictating how I presented myself or my business! I want to one day be able to be self sustaining, so that I can travel anywhere, anytime to photograph elopements and weddings. I figured if I worked for myself and had my own business, I was the one who was able to make the rules. So here we are!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I fell in love with photographing couples and their love from day 1 of my adventure elopement and intimate wedding endeavors. I’m the photographer that will be tearing up behind the camera as you say your vows to your loved one. Ever since I was a kiddo, I’ve loved love. I would take pictures of anything and everything that represented love to me! (I was also a sucker for any TLC wedding show). I’m a queer, woman-owned business and I’m so proud to have been able to make my dreams come true despite the odds being against me in certain capacities.
The road has been a long and winding one to get to where I am at today professionally. It hasn’t always been easy- Shortly after I started my business, I was in a car accident that caused me to have to undergo surgery on my left hand, and I wasn’t able to photograph for about 8 months. Not being able to photograph and create art put me in a really dark place for quite awhile. The depression kept me from fully going after my dreams. But eventually, I found my footing, and have hit the ground running towards my dreams ever since! I am happy to have booked so many weddings and engagement sessions this year. I feel like everything was difficult at first, so that I can sit back and enjoy the fruits of my labor now.
Along the way, I’ve learned to not compare myself to other photographers. Comparison is the thief of joy! I’ve also learned that being different should be celebrated- who wants to see the same type of photos over and over? It’s so important for me to express to the world that my brand and business is a safe space for people who feel too weird, or feel like outcasts, and for people who value individuality and uniqueness. Love is love, and BLM. Always. Inclusivity seems to be lacking in the wedding industry, so it’s important for me to express that all different kinds of people from all different walks of life are welcome into the space that is Dizzy Lizzy Digital.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Denver has SO many amazing spots to visit. I absolutely LOVE this city! If I had a best friend visiting the area, I would first take them to a local coffee shop (Rivers and Roads Coffee is my jam!), then for lunch, I would take them to Blue Sushi on 16th street mall. Next, we would go scope out Downtown Golden and Red Rocks, as well as Idaho Springs- finishing off with a delicious pizza from Beau Jo’s. I love that there are so many rad places to visit within an hour to two hours from Denver. Also, Twist & Shout Records is such a neat place to visit, especially for the nostalgic music lovers. Nature and being outside is my favorite part of Colorado and Denver, so there would definitely be a lot of time spent outdoors.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my girlfriend, Danie. She has always supported me going after my dreams, and without her, I would’ve never purchased my dream camera to then cultivate my dream business. She saw my potential and has been cheering me on since the beginning.
