Meet Kristel Powell | Sneaker & Magnet Designer, Content Creator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristel Powell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kristel, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have always pursued a career that had a creative element to it. I have an MBA and the creative aspect of marketing was something I fell in love with early on in college. Being creative every day is when I feel most fulfilled.

Up until December of last year, I was working a 9-5 job on top of my side hustle. I would come home from work and work another 5-6 hours on Stylin Brunette work. I told my friends my 9-5 pays the bills and my side hustle fills my soul. Now that I have left my 9-5 to focus on my brand, I am able to be creative every day and it is truly wonderful.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started Stylin Brunette the blog/Instagram to try to connect myself with other men and women who were interested in the same things I was I.e. vintage china, tablescapes, vintage fashion, and entertaining.

I used my platform as a way to make friends and build an online community. I knew from the beginning that I wanted to turn my blog/Instagram into a brand that could then be a full-time career.

It wasn’t until I saw a gap in the market for cute sneakers that led me to create Stylin Brunette Sneakers. That is when I truly fell in love with designing products.

Fast forward to September last year, I had just bought my first Stanley Cup from Target and I wanted a way to personalize it. I could not bring myself to put a sticker on it. I just couldn’t commit to a sticker. However, the cup looked so plain without anything. One day I decided ok, I’m going to just put a sticker on it. I grabbed one of my Stylin Brunette magnets, that I sold for cars, to hold up to the cup to measure if that was a good size, and viola! I realized my magnets worked on stainless steel cups. From there I started designing magnets and it just exploded in popularity.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My success can be attributed to the wonderful friends and family who have encouraged me and supported me in my pursuit of growing my brand.

Cory, my incredible husband is my number 1 fan and biggest cheerleader. His continued encouragement, advice, and support are the real reason I was able to take a chance at growing my business. I will forever be grateful to him for believing in me and my goals.
