We had the good fortune of connecting with Samuel Howard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Samuel, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
When people come into my gallery or see my work at a show the wow factor comes into play right away. My photography is a different niche than the landscape photography you see from other photographers in Colorado. My work comes alive and people enjoy that.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My name is Samuel E Howard I am a award-winning fine art railroad photographer based in Centennial, Colorado. I combine both the
incredible Colorado landscapes and the rich history of mountain railroading. As one looks at my work,
they experience the sounds, smells and the beauty of our treasured West.
I photograph all over the state of Colorado where steam engines on the narrow gauge are still king.
My favorite place to photograph is still the Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge RR. I especially prefer the
autumn season when snow blankets the high mountain peaks. My choices to photograph have spectacular environs and compliment the power of the trains. A thundering steam engine is a joy to
photograph and the viewer is transformed to a time long gone.
I am the sole artist in the Caboose Gallery, a gallery in Littleton, housed in a authentic 1880s
Chicago/Burlington/Quincy wooden caboose. The atmosphere is a perfect locale for my
Color and black and white images, many created on infused aluminum.
My Denver’s Union Station photographic portfolio is an ongoing project receiving much public acclaim.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For a short drive up I 70 about an hour from Denver The Georgetown Loop Railroad and walking around Georgetown Co. I would also taken them south of Denver and ride the Manitou Pikes Peak Cog to the top of Pikes Peak and maybe a lunch or dinner train on the Royal Gorge Railroad.
For a longer trip out of Denver The Cumbres Toltec from Chama New Mexico to Antonito Colorado
and a must for everyone the Durango Silverton from Durango to Silverton Colorado and a few days to also see Mesa Verde and drive over Red Mountain Pass with some of the best scenery in the state.
There’s a lot to see in this state.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My late father Harry Howard who mentored me and always showed me how to take a better photograph with a good composition. The most important part of a photograph.
