We had the good fortune of connecting with Holiday Darling and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Holiday, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
From as early as I can remember, I was always engaging in some sort of creativity; they were opportunities to get lost in my imagination–which itself served as an escape from a fractured family and traumatic childhood. In my own time, I was able to turn escapism into expression and use my creativity to not only engage with the world, but find myself a community of like-mindedly creative, queer people. Being creative makes me feel better about being myself, so I committed myself to pursuing my creativity and utilizing it to represent and celebrate myself and my community.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My creative expression span many mediums–from photography, design, music production, and more. I always called myself a jack of all trades, because I could never abstain from adding more creative interests into the roulette of software, hardware, and performance experience that I have. As I alluded to earlier, a lot of my creativity was–and still is–as much a means of personal expression as it is escapism and therapy. My life feels better when I create, especially when I get to create with/for my friends and community.
The ethos of my creativity is rooted in my identity as queer and counter-culture. It’s not just those who are queer, but in particular queer and frightening to mainstream sensibilities that have to often overcome an insurmountable number of obstacles and pushback when trying to find a place to showcase their creativity. If I am not showcasing my own work, I want my efforts to go towards helping those in my community.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting me in Denver for a week, it would absolutely be planned around one of Novelí or Scout’s shows–they showcase some of the best Denver’s queer counter-culture scene has to offer! We’d go out to eat at Sushi Rama in RiNo and hit up Pon Pon afterwards, maybe go dancing at XBar if Lisa Frank 666 is hosting GOTH POP! My favorite spots in the city are largely influenced by some of my favorite people in the city. I am a socialite and an extrovert–I love spending time with my friends, so the more the merrier!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Well I absolutely have to dedicate my shoutout to Peaches Christ–without whom I would not have been referred to you for this interview. So thank you, Peaches, and if any of you don’t know who Peaches Christ is, you need to go find out!
Even in just thinking about how I got this interview led me down a chain of connections-turned-friends spanning years. It’s undeniable that where I am today would not have been possible without the positive impact my found family, friends, and community have had, and I that is what drives me to give back with my creativity.
