We had the good fortune of connecting with Johanna Voss and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Johanna, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Overtime, I’ve come to realize and accept (which is the key part) that it truly is a marathon not a sprint. I absolutely have to take care of my physical, mental and emotional health in order to have any staying power in being an entrepreneur. Yes, when you’re first starting out, you say yes to any opportunity (especially the paying ones) without discretion. I believe that’s okay and part of the hustle of birthing a business baby, It’s part of the territory. The more time you spend growing your business, you realize the cost of some of your decisions and can better understand the impact of them. So work-life balance, from my experience is hard in the beginning. It was a lot of work and doing what I could to keep the lights on, so to speak. Balance? What’s that? With time, I realize the power of, and how much I crave white space. White space to create, think, process, dream, explore. So the balance between “working” and being in my business vs time outside of my business, both going for a bike ride, non-screentime, cooking as well as blank, open, unscheduled days on the calendar is the magic formula for success. Better yet, it’s what will take my business and I to the next level.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have a talent agency, representing female social media influencers, authors and speakers, majority of whom are women of color. I’m super proud of closing over $2 million dollars of business on behalf of my clients. Our agency is well-rounded women who tell stories with dimension. Their backgrounds are varied. Their audiences are far-reaching. But they all have one thing in common and that’s being endlessly relatable. Our clients love brands that actively question what they think they know about their consumers. Brands that seek to connect with consumers through their needs AND their values. All of our partnerships are very intentional. There’s been a few guiding lessons + mantras along the way. 1. Trust the process and your intuition. 2. Move your feet while you pray. Meaning while you sit and hope for something to happen, take steps, however little, to move in that direction.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Dreaming of a pre-Covid time! I’d take my bff to Union Station to sit on the benches and watch the world go by. It’s an Amtrak stop on trains going east and west. So fun to talk to people coming in from St Louis or heading out California. So easy to close my eyes and imagine a time when this was happening in the early 1900’s. We walk the Sunnyside neighbourhood as it’s one of my favorite neighbourhoods in Denver (and right next to where I live). We go for a sunrise run at Sloan’s Lake and watch the sun come up with the Denver Skyline in our view.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shoutout to my clients – for believing in me and trusting me with their businesses. As an agent, I do my work in the world, representing them. And that takes trust to hand that (the negotiation, building relationships) over to someone else (me) so I have so much love and appreciation for them. Without them, I wouldn’t have a business.
