Meet Kelly Nix | Managing Director

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelly Nix and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelly, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
From my perspective as the Managing Director at Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary, I would say that the most surprising aspect of the farmed animal sanctuary industry to those on the outside is the incredibly rich and varied personalities of the animal residents we care for. People might not realize that farmed animals are as distinct as pets, like dogs and cats. At Luvin Arms, we see daily how each resident exhibits their preferences, friendships, dislikes, and quirks. They form social bonds, show affection, and can be playful, contemplative, or assertive. Our approach to care is tailored to recognize and respect these personalities, ensuring that each resident is seen and treated as an individual with intrinsic value, not as a commodity. This individualized attention means that we look beyond just meeting their basic needs – we strive to provide a life that allows for emotional fulfillment and expression of natural behaviors, which is both challenging and deeply rewarding.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career journey is a personal and professional narrative that intertwines my passion for education, my love for animals, and a steadfast belief in compassion and advocacy. What sets me apart is perhaps this blend of an educator’s insight and an activist’s heart, leading me to where I am today as the Managing Director at Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary.
The path to this point was not straightforward. I transitioned from a secure and well-paying public school administrator position to a role many might not see as conventional or lucrative. Yet, I believe what I am doing now is rich in purpose and fulfillment. I am most proud of taking that leap of faith, driven by a calling to contribute to a cause far greater than myself.
The challenges were manifold, from overcoming friends and family’s initial skepticism to adapting to an entirely different industry with its own unique demands. But the lessons have been invaluable. I’ve learned that resilience is key and that making a difference often requires bold steps outside one’s comfort zone. I’ve also learned that the most profound growth often follows the decision to pursue what truly matters to you.
As for what I want the world to know about me, my brand, and my story—it’s that this isn’t just about a job. It’s about a mission to educate, advocate, and provide sanctuary for sentient beings who cannot speak for themselves. This mission is evident in every story of rescue and rehabilitation at Luvin Arms.
I want the world to recognize the impact of humane education and understand that each choice can contribute to a kinder, more compassionate society. It’s a message I first embraced during my transformative encounter with Marley Rose, the tender calf at Luvin Arms, and one I now have the honor of sharing daily with others.
This role demands dedication, compassion, and the willingness to face animal agriculture’s uncomfortable truths. It’s a challenge that the entire Luvin Arms family—founded on the principles of Shaleen and Shilpi Shah, supported by a devoted staff, and bolstered by a community of compassionate supporters—is ready to meet. Together, we’re not just caring for animals but fostering a movement of kindness and change. And that is truly extraordinary.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d love to express my deepest gratitude to the myriad of individuals and groups who’ve played a pivotal role in the success of Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary. Firstly, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to my incredible staff; their continuous dedication and tireless efforts are the backbone of this sanctuary. Each day, they bring their passion and expertise, ensuring that every animal receives the highest standard of care.
Equally deserving of recognition are our volunteers. These selfless individuals donate their time, energy, and skills to help us in countless ways, from daily animal care to supporting our community outreach efforts. Their contributions are invaluable, and we simply cannot function without their generosity.
I also want to acknowledge our supporters. Their belief in our mission and their ongoing support, whether through donations, sharing our stories, or advocating for animal welfare, empowers us to continue and expand our work. This network of compassionate individuals and organizations helps us to create a safer, kinder world for farmed animals.
And, of course, a special shoutout belongs to Shaleen and Shilpi Shah, the co-founders of Luvin Arms. Their vision and leadership have brought this sanctuary into being and fostered a community built on empathy and action. Their commitment to providing a haven for farmed animals and educating the public about the plights of these animals has been nothing short of inspirational.
It’s the collective effort of all these amazing people who write Luvin Arms’ story. Each act of kindness, each hour spent caring for the animals, and each voice raised in support of our cause are integral threads in the fabric of our sanctuary’s story. I am eternally grateful to everyone who has been a part of this journey. Thank you for helping us make a difference in so many animals’ lives and being a part of our compassionate community.
