We had the good fortune of connecting with Patti Mamalis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Patti, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Power word Postcards has an interesting beginning. In 1995 I was going through a very difficult divorce. I was a single mother of four sons, a full time kindergarten teacher, and suffering from a deep dark depression. I was grasping at straws to find ways to pull myself up by the boot straps. I started cutting words out of magazines and created these inspirational, motivational postcards. I say that I started as a kinder-preneuer. I then became a hobby-preneuer selling Power word Postcards at Farmers Markets, church boutiques, and just with my friends and family. I had so much success I became a wanna-be-preneur. so I got Power word Postcards LLC set up. i was still teaching kindergarten full time and doing Power word Postcards on the side as a solo-preneur. I then decided to retire from teaching and that is when Power word Postcards became a full fledged and I became an entrepreneur at last. Because of the power of a simple handwritten message with powerful words that helped me personally so much ,I had the inspiration to make Power word Postcards a business. My ultimate mission and goal is to be a DayMaker and literally make people’s day with Power word Postcards.
What should our readers know about your business?
Most of Power word Postcards has been easy, joyful, enlightening and in the flow. It is a great company with products that inspire, motivate, and support people on their life journey. Sometimes life is just hard. When a person receives a handwritten Power word Postcard in the mail it literally makes their day. I am so proud of how far Power word Postcards has come and impressed by the personal handwritten messages, excellent customer service, and DayMaker Bags they do for teachers and hospital employees. The biggest challenge Power word Postcards has faced is growing pains… both with staffing and product production. It has been tricky hiring staff to help with the tasks of running a business and getting enough inventory of products for big sales to happen. The biggest lesson I have learned is not to hire employees out of state. Yikes, I had three employees in three different states and that was a nightmare. I want the world to know about Power word Postcards this rapidly growing company that sells inspiring products or has the full service option with a team of hand writers to write messages for you.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Tempe Arizona in the metro Phoenix area. I love when out of town people come to visit. My husband and I have a few favorites that we like to take everyone who visits. The first thing we do is drive up South Mountain to look at the view. It is incredible. At the top of the mountain you can see all around Phoenix, Glendale, Peoria to the west, Mesa Tempe Chandler to the east and Scottsdale to the north. it is breath taking. We also like to take a little drive out to Canyon Lake. There is a steamboat tour there The Steam Boat Dolly. it is a two hour tour on the lake and you get to show off The Arizona terrain as well as some native animals. They have a dinner-sunset cruise as well as an afternoon cruise. So much fun. Our favorite restaurants are Uncle Sal’s and George’s Gyros both in Scottsdale but not very far away at all. Excellent food, amazing service, friendly wait staff, and a variety of menu items. My husband and I really like live comedy shows and in the Phoenix area there are many to choose from. On the first Friday of every month we go to Down Time Wines in Chandler. This is a small quaint family run mom and pop shop where they make wine right there on site. So the first Friday includes appetizers, a glass of wine and a comedy show that is spectacular and so funny tears run down my legs. We also have an every weekend show at JP’s in Gilbert. This is also a family run business. The owner is a retired cop and adds many humorous stories about that. As you can see we love to support small family businesses.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have always resonated with that quote “it takes a village”. There is not one particular person I want to shout out but a whole group of people. Being a single mom I was supported loved and encouraged first and for most by my family but also with other single moms. Together we united and gave each other the support, love and even recourses we all needed. Along my life journey I have had personal counseling and also been very involved in women’s groups. Women supporting women, again best “village” I could have. As a business owner, I love being around successful business owners watching and learning and connecting with their energy. It does take a village sometimes.
