We had the good fortune of connecting with Caroline Glover and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Caroline, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I think we are all forever looking for the perfect work life balance (spoiler alert: I haven’t found it). But, I did find after having Franny (my one year old daughter) that I HAD to find some sort of balance. Having her put a lot of things into perspective for me. Work and the restaurant has always come first… with her in my life– that isn’t the case anymore. It’s helped me look up and around a bit more. And realize that if something goes wrong at the restaurant, it isn’t the end of the world.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been in the hospitality industry since I was 16. I got the bug early… from being the to- go at Chilis to opening Annette the path was not straight forward at all. It included, culinary school, working in NYC, farming in PA and VT and CO… and moving around A LOT. But I do know one thing for sure… my love for food and cooking never went away. Once I recognized that nothing would satiate me more than cooking I fully gave in and opened Annette. I’m really proud of what the team has built over the last 7 years. We’ve made it through so many challenges. And we’ve stayed true to who we were since day one. That isn’t easy.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would start the day with them at Lula Rose for coffee and swing by stowaway for a bite and another hot beverage. Levain for another meal… let’s call it lunch! and end at Cart Driver for pizza and Negronis. If we decide food isn’t the only thing we are doing for the day… one of my favorite spots is the botanical gardens. And if we are really ambitious (and it’s winter) a skate ski up at El Dora to help us work up another appetite..
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
One hundred percent wouldn’t have two restaurants without my husband Nelson. To have someone support you the way he does is the only reason I opened Annette. Days that I doubted myself… he didn’t. Before he came on full time at Annette he was always there at the end of the day cheering me on.
