We had the good fortune of connecting with Christina Son and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christina, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Ever since I got out of college, I have been working nonstop for a corporate job that gives me no fulfillment. After 6 years, I can without a doubt say that the concept of ‘cog in the machine’ is terrifyingly real. For society to think consider this a norm makes me question the purpose of humanity. Is this really all there is to it? So this past year I reached my breaking point, I had to stop this vicious cycle and decided to take a leap of faith. I started my own photography business! I didn’t know anything about starting a business, what licenses I needed to get, how to set up contracts and legal documentation but it didn’t matter. The most important step was to break out of the corporate mentality and start to independently think for myself. No one says it’s an easy path to divert from comfort but that’s when you also start to know yourself, know your worth. It’s ironic to say, but it’s a pretty liberating feeling once you are able to take a step back and start to perceive time in a different light. So it’s not that we don’t have self reliance, we just don’t practice it enough.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I truly believe that simplicity is key. That is how I want to showcase my work, my perception on the world for everyone to see. I think in today’s society there are too many distractions that prevents us from living in the moment and recognizing that we are so fortunate to be living in a time like this. Mental distractions are the biggest challenge today that skews our perception of ourselves and how we should constantly be changing to be something different. I think it’s time to start appreciating what we have and cherish the people, places, and adventures around us. I feel most myself when I’m hiking in the mountains where I can hear my thoughts or get lost in the city. This allows me to translate the motions and emotions through my photos. It definitely takes time to develop and find your style and purpose in photography. I’m still working on it. I have discovered what I enjoy, what I don’t like, what I’m good at, where I need work on, it all is just a matter of experience and exposure. I want to relay my message to my generation (Millennials) that everything doesn’t need to be complicated. Sometimes the best answers are the simplest ones. We just need to see it from a different point of view.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A Millennial’s Day in Denver, Colorado:

-Wake up early for a hike at Lake Isabelle near Nederland (all-time favorite hike!) One of the best alpine lakes close to Denver with stunning mountain, lake, nature and animal views

-Get a quick coffee downtown at Kaffe Landskap

-Then head over to the Golden Triangle neighborhood and get literally anything at Leven Deli’s. Absolutely love the dolmas and chocolate tahini brownie. The atmosphere is always so energetic and gives off a neighborhood crowd

-If it’s a Sunday, check out the Pearl St Farmers Market for some fresh produce

-Discover some thrift/vintage and boutiques on Pearl St (Common Threads, Yucca)

-A must stop at Tokyo Premium Bakery, go as early as you can, they sell out quick!

-Bike around Washington Park (or people watch, one of my favorite past times)

-Cocktails before dinner at Ok Yeah!

-Dinner at Work & Class. Chickpea croquettes and their whole fish is delicious. No reservations.

-End the night with 9 holes at Puttshack

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The endeavors of humanity and nature never ceases to amaze me! This will always be an inspiration for my photos. However, the most significant person that deserves the biggest acknowledgement is my partner. With us being complete polar opposites, he has shown me a new way to perceive through the lens. I give gratitude every day to you and to whomever/whatever is out there that made our paths collide. Thank you for believing me and can’t wait to see what the future holds for us, xo!
