We had the good fortune of connecting with Steve Hyde and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Steve, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My wife and I have always loved photography and have been flying drones for many years. We started to post images on Facebook and Instagram and had interest in people buying our work. To sell drone images, you need a drone license. So 2 years ago we decided to get drone licenses and start a business. We have really enjoyed it, its great having a business where you are doing what you are passionate about.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The drone industry is an unusual one. There are many uses for drones. Since my wife and I both really love photography, we found a niche early on. Some drone photographers do mountains or wildlife, We live in the city and don’t have mountains or wildlife, so we focused on urban drone photography. Using a drone provides a really unique perspective and combining drones and land photography, you get a more complete final product. It isn’t an easy business to be in, along with all the regular photography challenges like light, time of day, weather, etc, you also have a lot of rules and regulations to follow. Most drone photography jobs take quite a bit of planning and coordination. We have learned a lot and are still learning. The drone community online is a close group of people, and we have a lot of great friends with a lot of experience. If we run into something that we need help with, we always have a good friend that can help.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Going to new places to take drone photos is not easy. No matter how much you research your trip, you have to know the places you can fly legally and be able to get the best photos. We often host drone people from other cities when they are in our area. We show them the best locations to photograph and get content. They return the favor when we are in areas we are not familiar with. We also are admins in a big drone group in Houston called Houston Drones. We host monthly meetups at good locations around the city. It is a good chance to get to know local drone users, help new users, and just get out and have a good time.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A huge shoutout to Joanna Steidle. Her work is inspirational. My wife and I both have followed her for years and we have gotten better from knowing her!
