We had the good fortune of connecting with Julia Deaton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The idea of building something from the ground up with sheer will and determination is something that no one can take away from you. There are also no rules in a sense. The results that you get are directly correlated with how much work you put in. There is no cap to how much you can succeed with being self-employed and that fact really excites me. It’s easy to romanticize being your own boss and being in charge of your own future. That is what really drove me to start my own business and it continues to drive me to keep being better and better.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
So I am a licensed health insurance advisor in over 25 states. I get to help individuals and families between the ages of 18 and 65 get insured and I’m also able to help small businesses with up to 50 employees. Previous to starting this business, I was a Respiratory Therapist for 4 years. I started at the peak of COVID-19 and gave all of myself to that. I think that the experience I got from working in inpatient and outpatient healthcare gave me a lot of knowledge and skills that apply to educating folks on their health insurance options. Understanding the healthcare system from the inside definitely sets me apart from other health insurance agents. Starting your own business is not easy, I don’t care what anybody says. In the first year of being a business owner, I had to work on a lot of personal thought processes and habits to really take off. Owning a business isn’t just a career choice, it’s a lifestyle. You have to own the part and really challenge yourself personally and professionally. I learned that consistency will always prevail, even more than natural talent. You also have to really be passionate about what you’re doing, especially in this line of work. If you don’t genuinely care about helping people better their insurance situation AND financial situation, then you have no business working in any healthcare setting. This business is about helping the general public and in turn, there will be success.

I named by brand after my grandparents. I had a tough early adulthood, and they showed me faith and compassion that changed the entire trajectory of my life. GG Health Plans, LLC is named after George and Gudelia Floratos. Otherwise known as my angels on earth. I owe everything to them.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So I’m very fortunate and live on the outskirts of the city. I would want to take them to Cherry Creek North to get drinks at Forget Me Not. I’m also a huge fan of the Highlands so I would take them bar-hopping to Happy Camper and Recess. But there are also some places on MY bucket list downtown so we would probably hit different places like Williams & Graham and Tap fourteen. If she wanted a WILD time, I’d probably take her to RINO or Larimer area. If we were to get out of the city, I think going to Idaho Springs would be another place or to have a grand ol’ time in Blackhawk. I’m not generally a big hiker but there are some fun trails that I enjoy like Herman’s Gultch or we could just send it and do the Manitou Incline. I’m definitely more of a city person though so we would just jump around between LoHi and McGregor Square.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many! I work with a team of strong women who inspire me day in and day out. If I had to narrow it down, my shoutouts are to Katherine Moskal and Kourtney Roberts because those two are responsible for the woman and business professional that I’ve become. Another shoutout to my favorite book to date, Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins because the mental control and callousness that you need to create in order to be a successful business owner is out of this world. But the two ladies previously mentioned supported the growth from day one and I’m eternally grateful that they helped create this version of me.
