We had the good fortune of connecting with Becky Mickletz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Becky, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The people by my side! I have always believed in nurturing my relationships, whether I’ve known someone for 5 minutes or 5 years. Part of that is putting myself in a room with people who know way more than me in addition to those who know about other topics. Diversity really is the spice of life, baby!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve lived nine lives for sure.

I originally wanted to work in the. the music industry as an album artwork or poster designer. I took a blind leap to California where I took on many jobs — from a bartender, server, concert photographer, field marketing manager, in-house graphic designer at an agency with an office the size of a shoe box, kickboxing instructor, event production director, artist manager, and a few more I’m sure I’m forgetting. I finally got to the point where I observed so many different forms of business and CEO styles that I realized, “Hey, I can do what they do. And I think I can do it better.” So, I started my own brand design agency full-time, which I ran for nearly a decade in total.

Then, I met a local Denver agency that took me on yet another path in my career — Fireside at Five. Here, my left and right sides of the brain get to play together nicely as I lead as a Content Marketing Specialist.

And at some point during these twists and turns (and from many years of burnout), I learned the importance of mental health, not only in myself but within others. I became certified in Mental Health First Aid in 2019 with the goal of providing as many free, accessible, and understandable resources as possible.

The biggest thing I learned thusfar in my journey is that things don’t need to be difficult or intense in order for them to matter. I used to tie my value to how busy I was and…spoiler…that is not equivalent to success. The slowdown is just as important, if not more important — atleast to me! I find I need time to be bored, to create for the sake of creating, and of course, take care of my mental health in the process.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In another life I’m pretty sure I was a travel agent so buckle up. I often ask people, “What National Park do you want to see?” and plan from there! In no particular order…

You gotta get in a crisp early hike paired with a quick stop at Golden’s Bonfire Burritos.
I love an evening at Union Station, grabbing a drink at the Terminal Bar before hitting up a show or event.
If music is in the cards, Red Rocks or Dillon Amphitheater are an obvious must, but the Bluebird is a close second.
Supporting local when I can and showing them a bit of the heartbeat of the city. Some favorites include MATTER Printshop, Brother’s Bar, Rivers & Roads Cafe.
Take them to the farm I volunteer at called Broken Shovels to love on all the animals!
Mother. Freakin. Nature. In any way, shape, or form.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My original OG Mentor Jerry de Wilde. When it came to career plans + big moves, the best advice he gave me was “Come on out. The water’s fine.” I’ve tried to live with that mindset ever since.
