We had the good fortune of connecting with Jody Engel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jody, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I decided to open The Meadows Veterinary Center in 2014 because I saw the need for a companion animal veterinary practice in Northern Colorado that not only focused on providing compassionate care to our pet patients, but also to their owners. I envisioned a practice where the veterinary team and the client worked collaboratively to help their pets live longer, healthier lives.
Now more than ever, I believe that because we are a privately owned veterinary practice. we can continue to meet that vision. Unlike many of the practices in Northern Colorado that have transitioned to corporate ownership where the focus is on profits and the bottom line, we continue to focus on our clients, patients and our team.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Many people assume that the veterinary office they use is locally owned. However, over the last decade many practices, including those here in northern Colorado have been purchased by private equity or large corporations, often unknowingly to their clients. These investment groups view pet care as an investment center looking to maximize their return on investment. Large consolidators use economies of scale to their advantage, but these profits are directed back to their home office, not our communities.
Despite the mounting pressures and obstacles placed on privately owned practices, The Meadows Veterinary Center is locally owned and operated. We are proud to serve the clients in northern Colorado who share the desire to provide comprehensive care to their pets and appreciate excellence in client care. We take the time to listen to and work with our clients. We are committed to continuous growth and education for our entire healthcare team. This allows us to adapt our practice to the latest innovations in pet healthcare. Through this approach we specialize in making healthcare plans specific to our patient’s needs.
We strongly believe that choosing a veterinary team in a privately owned practice is the best way to ensure that you and your pet get personalized care from a team that has your best interest in mind.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is something that I am proud to say I do often! Northern Colorado is a great place to share with visitors. We tend to keep it local on our adventures and outings. Here on the east side of I-25 we are lucky to have many small businesses and restaurants along main street in Windsor.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
After the unexpected loss of my husband a few years ago, I was suddenly in a position where I needed to rely on the love and support of a network of friends and family. At work, my associate veterinarians and team of employees have embraced our practice vision which has allowed me to take time to focus on my children. My children continue to give their mom grace as the joy of being a veterinarian and small business ownership keep me busy.
