We had the good fortune of connecting with Aleks Talaro and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Aleks, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always loved cats and when I heard about Cat Cafes I started researching how to start one.
From there I found a local rescue group and we began to work together to see how to bring a cat cafe to Boulder. I researched cat cafes locally and globally, as well as how I wanted to set my cafe apart from others. As an artist I really wanted the cafe to reflect my idea of a psychedelic theme. We found a local mural artist, Hilary Rose and she brought the idea together with a psychedelic forest themed mural which showcased our cats. My goal was to not only create a comfortable space for the cats to find new homes, but add a creative therapeutic space for my community.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been interested in a variety of arts from a very young age. I have enjoyed dabbling in everything from traditional mediums such as drawing and painting as well as more skilled arts such as glassblowing. Traditional education has long caused me difficulty so I have self trained in most of the arts I explore. Overcoming personal health issues has been the largest obstacle. Switching up my methods of creation has been the most effective management for my creativity.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There’s a variety of interesting activities and places around Boulder and the surrounding cities. There are many beautiful open spaces to explore, including Sawhill Ponds in Gunbarrel. There’s many delicious restaurants around the city including Pasta Jay’s, Protos Pizza, and more. Denver also has some amazing attractions such as Meow Wolf and Spectra Art Space.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom, Susanne Lury, has been a massive source of support throughout this entire journey. Front Range Freedom Rescue has also been an instrumental part of Purrfect Pause Cat Cafe’s success. They have been our source of rescue kitties as well as a source of care and education for myself and my staff.
