We had the good fortune of connecting with Paul Demarte and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Paul, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
For years, even decades, I have watched films with my friend Mike (and other friends who join us as well). We have watched countess classics and continue to see new releases. We have logged endless hours examining films (often with hilarity) no one has even heard of. We watched some of the most outlandish films released. Sometimes nostalgia brings us back to movies we haven’t seen in years. Serious, silly or even a failed attempt, all of these films are treasures for someone. There is an audience out there. Our podcast tries to capture and share obscure, forgotten about and often overlooked films. We want to create a community for those who love film – in all of its beautiful and diverse forms.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Mike and I had been playing music together for years. When we weren’t working on music, we’d often watch films together – sometimes after our band practices. We watched all sorts of zany films, and we always had a blast watching them with others. Our living rooms became our own Mystery Science Theater 3000 viewing rooms. When the pandemic hit, like much of the art world, music was also shut down for a bit. We started discussing the idea of podcasting. We had this idea floating around for a few years, and since we had the music/recording equipment, we just hit record one day.
We have had many exciting opportunities so far. We were guest lectures at the Aurora History Museum on two occasions for their Mini-Con events. We have been able to work with local venders. We had actor Renoly Santiago as a guest on our 100th episode about Hackers (1995). We are appreciative of everyone’s time involved.
These have been exciting events, and they came from reaching out. We continue to reach out to those who have worked in the film industry. We would love to work with more local artists and groups. We hope we are able to continue this growth over the years to come. We are extremely thankful for our friends for being on the show, talking films with us and all those who listen.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Downtown Denver and the surrounding areas have a wealth of places to visit. Clearly, we need to go see a film or two. We love the Alamo Drafthouse! Great staff! Great food! Always cool events going on! Sie and Mayan are ideal theaters to visit as well. They also host fun events.
After a film, maybe a bite to eat? MAKFam on Broadway is the best! Dumplings and noodles for days! Everything here is a wonderful taste explosion.
Sam’s No. 3 should be on our list as well. The menu is endless. The options are endless! Green chili!
Bull and Bush Brewery is fantastic! Great atmosphere. Amazing drink selection.
Vesper Lounge. Inviting and friendly smaller bar. Best bar snacks in town!
The 1up Arcade Bar (Colfax and downtown). Relive those arcade moments and have a drink while doing it.
Black & Read, Twist and Shout and Wax Trax! Each a treasure trove of records and more.
Go see a local show. The Lion’s Lair and the Skylark are fun venues to check out.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Locally, everyone in Colorado working in the art scenes deserves massive credit. Often times those setting up concerts, screenings, any king of viewing, etc… are unsung heroes who have put in hours upon hours of time to make sure everything is right. We have a lot of filmmakers, musicians, artists, etc… working hard. They all need more recognition. We want to keep all of these venues and spaces open.
Local theaters such as Sie and the Mayan who host amazing shows, late night events and keep film thriving in our state.
Our parents, teachers and friends who discuss film and the imagination that comes from them are all to be thanked. Thank you for sharing something that has been so important in all of our lives. Thank you to all of our friends who have been on our show.
