We had the good fortune of connecting with Liz Hughes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Liz, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
At the time I started my business we were tight on money and we had a daughter that was asked to be on the high school cheer team and it was very expensive. I wanted her to have this experience and was determined to make it happen. I was working with Bobbi Brown Cosmetics at the time as a Regional Makeup Artist and have had experience doing makeup. Shortly after, I was serendipitously asked to do makeup for a wedding, which went extremely well; the bride even happened to be a blogger and asked if she could promote me to her audience. Things then kind of exploded, and I was suddenly doing makeup for tons of weddings. That validation was great, I realized I really had a talent for it, so I started my own business, and over 600 weddings later, I’m having more fun than ever.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have been a makeup artist for 19 years. I was lucky enough to start this journey working for Bobbi Brown Cosmetics. I loved her makeup style and when I heard her say “I believe that all women are pretty without makeup – but with the right makeup can be pretty powerful”, I got chills. I knew I needed to learn everything I can from her. This felt like my purpose and my future.

It never felt hard because I became a pretty good makeup artist quickly. I was in my early 40’s when I started and women liked me because of my age and felt like I could relate to them. I just had a passion for this and wanted to get better.

What sets me apart from other artist is that I am considered a natural makeup artist in Colorado and there is a huge market for that. Most of my clients are intimated with makeup and my goal is to have them feel beautiful and look and feel like themsevles.

What I would like the world to know about me is that I absolutely love empowering women and I do this thru makeup. I feel when women feel good and pretty, they are more powerful and happy. I feel this was my purpose and lucky that after doing this for 19 years, I still love it! I love my job.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would start our day with coffee and sourdough toast then do some kind of workout. We would go get some healthy food then off to boutique shop. Stop by a flower shop and get a coffee and share a treat. Go back to my house and take the dogs for a long walk. Make dinner with a nice bottle of Pino Noir. Watch a funny movie that makes us laugh until we cry.
