We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Shelese Pratt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Shelese, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
I think habits are a big part of success. Looking at the long game is essential for business. Your business isn’t going to be immediately successful, it takes time to build. You need to keep your overhead low, work long hours, take set back and failure as lessons, be passionate about what you do, be authentic in what you do and know that mindset and relationships are a cornerstone of any strong business.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I believe in integrative and holistic medicine. My practice and clinic are focused on neurology and complex medical conditions relating to metabolic disease. I use functional medicine and my expertise in biochemistry (methylation) and physiology to help my patients get to the root cause of their symptoms through a strategic approach. The modalities (tools of my practice) I use in my practice are nutrition (diet and nutritional supplements), botanicals, environmental medicine, classical homeopathy and hydrotherapy. Many patients come to my office after seeing many other doctors. They are scared, frustrated and looking for answers that no one has been able to figure out. I often tell people I look at medicine like I am a detective. I look for the clues that have lead to the current health situation with strategy. I am passionate about medicine and love what I do. I started my practice from nothing, and it took a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to build the business I have today. I made sacrifices to build my business. I learned how to work hard and re invest my money to build a practice that would thrive. I’ve learned to keep overhead low, be patient when times get tight, always hire out the things you don’t like to do, and keep a positive attitude even in hard times. I decided to become a doctor after years of searching for quality health care. I know what it feels like to be sick and my providers couldn’t help me. I had life threatening asthma in my early 20’s and recovered my health with naturopathic medicine. I want to serve those patients who are not able to get the health care they seek in a restrictive system. I studied naturopathic medicine, and built my clinic with the ultimate goal of improving patient’s health and quality of life.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am a nature enthusiast. I would start with a hike at Chautauqua. The flatirons are stunning and the fall is a beautiful time to hike. Then I would take them to The Buff for breakfast in Boulder. They have an amazing menu but I love the Ole. Then we could sit and have a latte at the Brewing Market in Lafayette. For lunch we could grab a Le Club at Moxie and sit outside in Louisville. It’s all possible during COVID and the people are always great in this area.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents, Shirley and Gordon Pratt. My tax attorney Mark Carson and my very first mentor in business Susan McCrossin.
