Meet Jenny McCarty | Artist & Ecologist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenny McCarty and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jenny, what are you inspired by?
I get this question a lot, especially from other creatives who say, “I don’t know what to paint — how do you find inspiration?” For me, it’s almost the opposite problem — I’m inspired by everything! I keep a list of paintings to make, just like a list of books to read — it grows and grows and grows.
I can go for a simple walk and find myself captivated by the way flower petals interlace, imagining how a close-up painting could capture their softness and hidden geometry. Or I’ll notice how light filters through a canopy of tree leaves, creating dancing shadows on the grass — it’s like nature is choreographing its own little show. And every time I see a wild animal, I feel pulled to tell its story — a story of perseverance, evolution, and belonging — through my brush.
I honestly don’t know how someone can step outside their door and not be inspired. The beauty, wonder, and hidden stories of the natural world are everywhere — waiting for us to slow down, notice, and translate them into something lasting. If someone isn’t feeling inspired, they probably just need to leave their phone at home, get out more, and look a little closer.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets my art apart is the way it invites people to pause and sink into the natural world — not just as scenery, but as a living story unfolding around us that we are a part of. My paintings are full of hidden details and surprises and a sense of wonder that invites you to slow down and reconnect. I love using vibrant colors and organic shapes to capture messages or moments you might otherwise miss — a deeper meaning, a quote, or how a wild animal is an important part of a larger system – like us, a sense of belonging. I also take pride in creating my work as sustainably as possible and using eco-friendly materials and packaging, so each piece honors the earth it celebrates.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that creativity needs room to breathe. It’s okay to rest, to make bad art, to follow the thread of an idea even when it doesn’t lead where you expected. I’ve learned that my best work happens when I stay true to what I care about — telling stories of the natural world, working sustainably, and sharing pieces that feel honest and vibrant. I’ve stopped following the “rules” of watercolor, it’s all art. I’ve also learned not to wait until everything feels “perfect” to share my work. I’m most excited right now for my work to be displayed for the next 4 months in the Boulder Chamber of Commerce – that wouldn’t have happened if I waited for it to be perfect, because perfect isn’t possible, it’s not real.
What I want people to know is that my art is more than just paintings to hang on the wall — it’s an invitation to remember our place in the wild, beautiful world we belong to. Each piece is created with care, respect for nature, and a hope that it will inspire others to slow down, look closer, and carry that sense of wonder into their everyday life. I believe that when we feel connected to the earth, we’re more likely to care for it — and if my work can be a tiny spark for that, then it’s worth every brushstroke.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend came to visit, I’d take them straight to Rocky Mountain National Park to hike among alpine lakes, spot elk or pika, and picnic with a view. We’d spend a day wandering Pearl Street in Boulder, maybe hit the Farmer’s Market on the right day, grab local coffee, see the art, and maybe hikie the Flatirons for those iconic views. If it’s warm enough, maybe go white water rafting in Clear Creek Canyon, then end the day with tacos. Colorado’s wild places, good food, and mountain sunsets never disappoint — they’re the best way to feel alive and inspired.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This shoutout is dedicated to my husband, Nate. He encouraged and believed in my art business before I did. His love for the outdoors, adventure, sustainability, commitment to people, and incredible work ethic shine through everything I do.
I truly couldn’t do this without his support — from his constant encouragement and belief in my vision, to giving me the time and freedom to focus fully on my art and business. And when I’m deep in work-mode, he’s always there with a reminder to take a break and come eat the healthy dinner he’s prepared. I’m so grateful for him and all the ways he makes this dream possible.
