Meet Laurie McGuire | Therapist & Coach/Consultant

We had the good fortune of connecting with Laurie McGuire and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laurie, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
I provide therapy, coaching, and consulting services with a holistic, integrative, mind-body approach to overall wellness. I am a mental health provider who is licensed in Maryland and Colorado, helping clients process and heal from trauma as well as improve their ability to manage anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges.
I supervise other therapists to help grow their skills as therapists. I also provide coaching and consulting to clients and organizations.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am a licensed clinical social worker and board-certified supervisor with over 25 years of experience providing therapy services to children, teens, and adults. I have spent much of that time working at the world-renowned Kennedy Krieger Institute, a Johns Hopkins affiliate, where I was also in leadership. I’ve completed internships at Sheppard Pratt, a foremost expert in the mental health field, as well as the University of Maryland’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. I’ve worked with individuals who have housing insecurity/homelessness through Catholic Charities, and have supervised Master’s Level interns and post-graduate level social workers. I bring a wealth of knowledge and experience as a therapist, consultant and coach, and am excited to share this in my new “hometown” after moving to Colorado 2 years ago.
One of the things that sets me apart from others in my field is that I view clients through a holistic lens, using a strengths-based, systems-approach, and have Post Graduate Certifications in Treating Children & Adolescents, Fitness Nutrition Specialist, Advanced Nutrition & Integrative Medicine for Mental Health Providers, Somatic Trauma Therapy, Circle of Security (attachment-based), Fussy Baby (attachment-based), and Leadership. A former Division 1 lacrosse player with a passion for exercise and fitness, I use this knowledge to help my clients improve both mental and physical wellness because it’s all connected!
I am most proud of my work in inner city Baltimore where I did home and school visits for years as well as having a career while being a single mom. I moved to CO for family reasons and started a business here after being a single mom for about 7 years. It was definitely hard to juggle a career and parenting. Now that my sons are grown and I’m no longer at their games, shuttling them around, or volunteering at their school or on the field, I am able to focus more on my passions, including consulting, supervising, volunteering, and program development. When I’m not working, I love watching Marvel movies, hiking, lifting weights, reading, and crowd surfing at concerts. I believe we should never stop playing like children!
One of my biggest challenges as a business owner has been narrowing down my scope of services since I have so many interests!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Entertaining in Northern Colorado is amazing! I would take friends to Rocky Mountain National Park and then to Estes Park to shop and enjoy lunch at the GrubSteak or dinner at SEASONED while there. Depending on the time of year, we would go boating on Horsetooth Reservoir, hike to Horsetooth Rock, and then stop by Odell’s or New Belgium on the way home. We would visit downtown Fort Collins and definitely shop at Salus for amazing-smelling soaps and bath bombs (among other things). In the fall/early winter, we would definitely attend a CSU football game, have a pregame drink and meal at Ginger & Baker, and see our favorite bartender there, Ian, as well as a post-game food at Social.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A shout-out to my wonderful husband who has supported and encouraged me to start my own business. He is my biggest fan and believes in me even when I doubt myself. I am also grateful for my years of experience, training, and mentorship at Kennedy Krieger Institute, a specialty hospital and outpatient program in Baltimore
