My motto is “too dumb to quit”. Coined originally from one of my favorite punk bands as an adolescent, The Queers, Another, from Charles Bukowski, is “Find what you love and let it kill you”. I find these to be motivators for my work. Keep that fire burning under your posterior and hold on tight, nails digging in, for the long haul. I’ve found that pure stubborn determination, or sheer stupidity, has been key to my success as an artist. With my career, the main thing I’ve gathered and pass on to my students is that resiliency is key. My favorite saying is, “Do the right thing, all the time.” I like this saying because it is focused on short term actions with long term impacts. I’m certainly not saying, “Don’t have a glass of wine” or “Don’t eat the extra piece of cake.” For me, this has meant that I can be encouraged to behave in a way that is consistent with my ethical standards when I take the long view rather than seeing each choice as an isolated incident. Part of fulfilling goals involves following a path that one feels is ethical and consistent with their own moral code. I believe that I’m more likely to fulfill my own goals when I see my actions and decisions as continuous with who I am and who I want to be in the future. Read more>>
