We had the good fortune of connecting with Brenda Hardwick and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brenda, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started my business just before leaving employment with the State of Colorado four years ago. There was a lot of fear, and time spent second guessing my decision to retire, but I knew I needed to change what I was doing. Working for myself was the answer, even though it was a scary proposition.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
As long as I can remember, I’ve been interested in entrepreneurship. It also seems that I’ve always been involved in some type of Direct Sales Network Marketing business, beginning with my mother’s Holiday Magic distributorship when I was around thirteen. She had my sisters and I ringing doorbells to help her sell the products. Since I was the eldest, it was me she pushed the hardest. I also had previous experience with this type of sales because back then, that’s how we sold Girl Scout Cookies.
From there I dabbled in several different network marketing companies: Tupperware during college, Amway (I actually joined them three times over my life!), Jafra Cosmetics, Young Living Essential Oils, and Bemer. I’m currently still a distributer of the last three. I use the oils and the Bemer myself, and in my practice with clients when appropriate. I am an Author, Speaker, Angel Communicator, and Energy Healer.
After retiring from a career spanning 27 years in Colorado State Government working in safety and loss control and then managing the workers’ compensation program for state employees, I started my own businesses. First is The Light Of Nature (TLON). I started this business so I could help people heal in a better way than what I saw happening in the program I ran in my state government career. The second one, Shine Your Light Publishing (SYLP) I started to help support my healing business through the Body Mind Spirit titles I’ve written, and to feed my desire to fill my childhood dream to be an author and write full time.
I have four published titles, two Fantasy and two Body Mind Spirit self-help, and there are two works in progress. The heart and soul of what I do is the Angel Communication and Healing that I bring to my clients. In preparation to retire from my job and go full time in TLON, I returned to school because the five degrees I already had didn’t support what I wanted to do in my own business. I got certified as an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, and this was what I thought I would be doing. However, when I began my practice, I quickly realized that my other gifts, my spiritual gifts, were the foundation of what I was doing when working with my clients. I began to study and cultivate those gifts as well.
I have always been able to see Angels. My earliest memory of this gift is at the age of three. At that age, I saw them as other children, except I could see through them. I never saw them as the people with wings that is always depicted in art and literature, and still don’t unless that appearance is important for the client. I began my business working out of my home. I set up a healing space in my basement. It wasn’t long before I realized that this wouldn’t work because many of my clients had issues with using stairs. I landed a shared space at the St. Andrew Lutheran Church Healing Arts Center and then moved into my own space there after a year. I also began to work the small, local metaphysical fairs to build clientele. I spent every free moment either attending the fairs to get to know the other healers and mystics, networking and to get my name and face out there.
Running a business, any business, is about generating clients. It doesn’t matter what your product is, you have to give samples, show up, and be willing to learn from what you see others in your chosen line of business are doing. Having the direct sales and network marketing experience helped me put this all together. I committed a full year towards this type of targeted activity. I knew I’d hit the mark when I walked into a fair that I wasn’t working, and another healer got up from her space because the client in front of her needed my expertise rather than hers. What a referral and confirmation of my gifts! That was more than four years ago. I have steadily continued to build my client list and expand what I offer. The pandemic caused a shift in thinking and in how to get to my clients. I’ve learned the necessary technology and can now provide the services I offer either in person or online. I have clients in Wales, Spain and several other states besides Colorado here in the US. There are also speaking engagements and group sessions that I offer both in-person with the social distancing of course, and online. I will continue to offer my services online even after we get back to whatever our public interaction develops into. None of this was what I would call easy but I did it.
I am fortunate that I have a retirement that covers my living expenses, so I am free from worrying about paying household bills through my business, for the most part. Having my own business also allows me to have the time to spend with my twin granddaughters who are two. It’s wonderful to be able to work my schedule around the calls for help I get and be able to go and lend a hand with them.
There are times when I have to look at how I’m doing things, back up and change. Running a business is not a static activity. You grow, your business grows, and you, the world and people, change. To remain viable, you have to be able and willing to change with it. I am truly blessed that I’ve been able to meet the challenges and continue to be successful. I offer assistance and share my business knowledge whenever the opportunity presents itself. It makes me happy to write words that inspire, explain, challenge your personal growth, and entertain. Tomorrow is not promised to any of us. So, I do as much as I can with each TODAY I am granted.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Red Rocks Amphitheater, Denver Performing Arts Center, Elitches, Water World, Garden of the Gods, Estes Park, Waterton Canyon The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate my shoutout to my sons, Ivan and James, who have supported me through all of my endeavors, and my friends and colleagues: Markie Davis, Gayle Fowler, Janine Bolon, Marcia McCaffery, and LizAnn Fischer who all have supported me in one way or another.
