We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicole Anderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicole, what role has risk played in your life or career?
RISK – If you don’t try and step out of your comfort zone, you will never know what will happen. It might be the best thing ever. So, growing up in Vermont, mom, dad, and I didn’t travel. The first time I left New England was my 8th grade trip to Washington, DC. So, when I decided to visit a college friend in Colorado, it was a big deal. I spent two weeks driving around town and falling in love with Denver and the mountains. Can you imagine the surprise to my family and friends when I came home from my trip, sold all my furniture, and drove back out to Colorado? I have no job and no place to live. But within the first two weeks, I had found an apartment, a job, and meet my future husband. I’m not much of a risk-taker, but this was the best, riskiest move I have ever made. I’ve now lived in Colorado for 22 years. I have been married for 20 years, and we have a 19-year-old son. So how do I feel about risk? Pretty damn good. I usually don’t take too much risk. Accounting is a pretty safe industry. But my husband and I do like to take a little risk on vacation. Our best stories are the events we didn’t have planned. We have a few good stories from our trip to Iceland that still make us laugh today.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Some people call me the Spreadsheet Queen. If you are not ready for QuickBooks Online, I have a simple, ready-to-use spreadsheet to track all your income and expenses. Or I can create one especially for you. That’s where my business name came from. A girlfriend of mine said, “you need to find a word with Excel in it.” And that’s when Excellent Bookkeeping Services was formed. So, after 25 years in corporate accounting spent in numerous large companies and starting my career with a Bachelors in Accounting, I know my debits and credits like the back of my hand. I support most of my clients on QuickBooks Online. I’m a full-service, remote accountant—everything except taxes. 😊
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I don’t have one favorite spot in the city. I have many favorite places in Denver. When we have friends visit us, we will cater our tours based on our visitor interests. From Red Rock Amphitheater scenery to trying a new craft beer at our local brewery. We love to get out and try new things. Our favorite mountain town is Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. We love to view wildlife.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to ShoutOut to the Polka Dot Powerhouse group. Polka Dot Powerhouse is an international women’s connection group. We have seven chapters in Colorado alone, and I’m a member of the Highlands Ranch Chapter. This group has saved me. After my last corporate job, I was headed on a career path that just wasn’t for me. I had invested time and money into it, I felt like I had to stay there, but the women in this group helped me get headed in the right direction. Without them, I don’t know where I would be today. From our weekly mastermind groups to monthly meetings, I learn new things every day from these powerful and smart ladies. We believe that we all go up together. We support each other in business and personal life—no competition to outdo someone else, just pure support.
