We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Metcalf and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea for Higher Terrain Aspen started with the desire to offer the Aspen community workouts that compliment the outdoors sports we all participate in here in the mountains. A workout that’s both challenging, and low impact. The Lagree Method offered at our studio is a core focused method, with a strong focus on lower body strength. It’s very functional and the perfect compliment to skiing, hiking, and biking as well as being amazing cross training! Additionally, I also own a Pilates studio called Flex Pilates Aspen ( located right across the street ) and it’s been amazing being able to offer a more intense workout to clients who enjoy the core focus of Pilates but are looking for a harder workout traditional Pilates.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I moved to Aspen from Miami where I practiced as a physical therapist, and worked as a Pilates instructor and personal trainer in a gym on South Beach. I opened a small private Pilates studio called Flex Pilates Aspen. I found Pilates to be an amazing workout, but thought while traditional Pilates was great for rehabilitation, it wasn’t always challenging enough. My style of teaching is more athletic, and clients really enjoyed the added challenge on the Reformer. However, not everyone is into one-on -one training which started the idea of opening Higher Terrain Aspen which specializes in group classes offering both the Lagree Method, and Pilates classes daily.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Favorite spots in Aspen depend on the season. Each season is so different and so amazing! Winter workout: Skin up Tehack Summer workout: Bike Maroon Bells Lunch: Meat and Cheese Dinner: Matsuhisa Dessert / Midday treat: Paradise bakery
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The Aspen community has been a huge support for Higher Terrain, and we’re so thankful for our clients who show up and work hard in our classes! The Lagree Method is tough, our motto is if it doesn’t challenge you it doesn’t change you!
