We had the good fortune of connecting with Jen Seregos and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jen, how do you think about risk?
What many people would consider a risk has been par for the course for me in my life. I’ve had an entrepreneurial spirit from a young kid and started my first business in college. I think many people consider entrepreneurship as risky, but I think it’s the most secure way to build a career. Think about it – If you have a job in corporate or wherever, you’re relying on ONE source of income. If you grow your own business, you’ll likely have many clients. If you lose one client, it’s not the end of the world and you’ve created processes and structures to get more. If you have one employer, and you lose your job, that’s a really big deal. In fact, it can be devastating. So taking “risks” has been my greatest source of success. I now have a process and strategy in place in my business to not only replace lost business but to scale and grow. I wouldn’t trade that for any “secure” job in an office.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Athena Digital is a full service digital marketing agency specializing in helping companies doing good in the world grow online. We work with eCommerce businesses, startups, tech companies, and mobile applications. We love to work with ambitious entrepreneurs who are innovating to make this world better. Our name, Athena, comes from the Greek Goddess of war and strategy. She represents strength and wisdom and is always shown with her owl, the symbol of wisdom. The road to our success has been very windy and bumpy. I’ve started a few companies with some wins and some failures, but everything was a lesson and brought me to this moment now. Overcoming challenges and resiliency is a prerequisite for being a business owner. I have had to work through so many challenges, most of which were psychological in nature. You see, when you start a business, that business is really a mirror showing you all your insecurities, flaws, and fears. In order to truly find success, you NEED to address those fears. My greatest challenges were extremely painful to work through because they were mine and mine alone. Any entrepreneur who’s found success I think will tell you it’s a journey inward more so than about the cold calls, the long hours, the work, or the skills. We expect to have those things. It’s the person you ARE that defines the success of your business.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would start off having drinks on the rooftop bar at Corrida. With views of the flatirons, this is one of the best spots in Boulder! I would then walk over to The Kitchen Next Door for a beautiful meal and require anyone who eats there to have the fresh oven-baked cookie for dessert! We’d also hit Rosalee’s pizzeria in Longmont, Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. Another essential would be a hike up in Ned at the Hessie Trail and hot cocoa at Ozo’s. Red Rocks is an incredible concert venue in the warmer months and we have world class ski resorts so if you’re a skier or snowboarder, you have to hit one of the many areas up here.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to so many people. My tribe has supported all my crazy startup ideas, business successes and failures and always encourages me to follow my dreams and passions. I want to express my most heartfelt gratitude to Karen and Joe, Laurie, Lois, Marshall, and Taylor.
