We had the good fortune of connecting with Vina Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vina, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted to create a creative space for like minded people as me that exudes a positive and supportive environment
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My 16 year old self thought that I would go to school for fine arts. I decided to use my art skills and my social skills in a field that suited me best. Hair. I envisioned myself at that time doing hair in new York for fashion week and fashion shoots , but life happened and that wasn’t the case. I knew the minute I started school I made it the best decision and my career that has served me best Began. I have no regrets on the salon I started in or ended in before I opened my own, but I knew I wanted something different. It’s a competitive Industry and where ego is king. And I wanted to put that away, support my staff and learn from each other. I wanted a place where I taught but also learned. I wanted a place where we shared thoughts and clients. That you as a stylist had your own identity and qualifications. There were no judgements or negativity towards your coworkers. I had never worked in a place like that and it was what I intended on creating. I can confidently say I not only succeeded but my staff would probably get a tattoo of my logo that’s how committed they are to this brand .
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Detroit is a place that has so many hidden gems and is full of beautiful people that are friendly and welcoming. I would take them to my favorite restaurant Selden standard . And stay at the shinola hotel. After dinner I would take them to “the belt” which is an alley that has Library Street art gallery , an outdoor bar , and a nightclub filled with art and black lights called Deluxx fluxx. We would wake up at shinola and walk downstairs for brunch at San morello .
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My staff!! They are my family and my everything
