Deciding to pursue an artistic or creative career path isn’t for the faint of heart. Challenges will abound, but so many of the artists we speak with couldn’t be happier with their choice. So, we asked them about how they made the decision in the first place.

I chose a creative career because it was the only thing that made sense to me. My biggest fear growing up was to be trapped in a job I hated or one that compromised my views and ideals, only to subvert those things for financial gain. While I probably could have ended up making a lot more money over my professional career, I feel like I’ve been doing the kind of work I’ve always wanted, to the point where sometimes it doesn’t feel like work. I like this question because there wasn’t a moment I chose to be an artist. I didn’t know I was pursuing a creative career, nor did I know why. It wasn’t until I was in it and looking back, that I can tell you I wouldn’t do anything differently. Even when I was in school, studying art, I felt separate from those that were openly studying to pursue a career in art. Maybe I just didn’t know what it would look like to be a professional artist and I was thinking linearly; thinking I didn’t want to outreach to gallery shows, or put up a series of paintings, or wasn’t good enough blah blah blah. I was in the beauty business for many years since my late teens only because it was something I had as a backup plan if college wasn’t the road for me. But because of that it was never what i really enjoyed doing and so after years owning the business it just took a toll on me mentally . Started to dread coming in every day. But just so happened that my daughter told me about Mochinut and so when I went to get some donuts suddenly the idea of buying into the franchise and doing what I love would be so fun. Since every location is individually owned, we are allowed to come up with our own glaze flavors and decorations. I’m a very hands on owner so it’s finally something I enjoy and get creative with.
