We had the good fortune of connecting with A Lack of Champions and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi A Lack of Champions, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
One person honestly can’t speak for everyone of course. Personally, from my (Shane Bischoff) experience, I have long admired the art form of Rock n’ Roll. From idolizing AC/DC and KISS as an adolescent to discovering Punk Rock through Nirvana, The Sex Pistols, Black Flag, and Dead Kennedys, the music and performance have always spoken to me and wanted me to do it myself. I assume my band mates, Alex Ruiz and Cody Bunn have a similar affection for music. Their tastes are both similar and different compared to mine. But they both are dedicating their time and energy to this the same as I am. Something about the thrill of performance, Rock n’ Roll, and a general love of music probably sparks them as well.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
A Lack of Champions has now been in existence for over a year. The band started with I (Shane Bischoff) met a kind fellow named Guillermo Aponte who happened to also be looking to play music. Through a search on Craigslist, we found a carpenter/lacrosse coach named Jacob Shannon who joined in on the drums. As months passed, Guillermo had personal commitments to attend to (though he still gives the group support) and we were on a bassist search for some months. When a young man, named Nirveek Shah, joined us on the bass, we wrote more original songs and played less covers.

We had our first gig opening for Rotten Mouth, from Chicago, at Globe Hall. A month later, we followed this up with an opening performance at a burlesque show at Jester’s Palace. Following this, we had two gig opportunities that unfortunately didn’t work out.

Jacob and Nirveek had other commitments to attend do and needed to ultimately step down. Alex Ruiz stepped in on drums and Cody Bunn took up the bass. Last month, we had our first performance as this line up at Seventh Circle Music Collective when fellow Denver band Years Down invited us on.

Suffice to say, a band is hard work. But passion exists in everyone who steps in to make the music happen. A Lack of Champions ultimately stand out in that we are a trio of men who are determined to play our hearts out. Or at least that would be my opinion. We are three individuals with our own unique tastes and personal experiences. As more songs come, I hope we will collaborate and create a unique raw and heavy Punk Rock n’ Roll.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Denver has a lot to offer. From personal experiences: Watercourse Foods, Your Mom’s House, Milk, Sie, Tattered Cover, Twist and Shout, Globe Hall, Seventh Circle Music Collective, and much much more.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Adrenalin. They are a fellow Punk Rock band in the Denver area, and they got us our next gig. They deserve a very big shout out.
