Meet Abby Korver | Artist and Author

We had the good fortune of connecting with Abby Korver and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Abby, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Honestly, the idea kind of landed in my lap by accident! Last year I needed a complex surgery that rendered me bed-ridden for about four months. During that time I started writing and published my debut novel. When the book released, I was still recovering from surgery so I hadn’t returned to working. I had a lot of time on my hands. I really wanted sprayed edges for my book, so I began looking into the process and decided to do it myself. I bought an airbrush and taught myself with the help of YouTube and the internet! My books were a huge hit, so I started wondering if other indie authors might also be interested in sprayed edges. I made an Instagram page and the rest is history!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I really love working with other indie authors and helping them make their books stand out. Unlike other companies that you find online, I include them in the design process and make it a personal experience. Every design is custom and every book is hand-sprayed! I think this truly makes my products unique and creative.
I never thought I would have the opportunity to do art as my job. In college, I studied art for 3 years before deciding to pivot into education. I didn’t think there would be a way for me to make a career out of art. I ended up teaching for nine years before my health struggles got the better of me and I quit to take care of my body. At the time, I was very angry and confused about my situation, and still struggle with it some days. But in retrospect, it’s one of the best things that has happened to me. It’s led me to where I am today and I’m so grateful for that.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would definitely be spending an afternoon at Meow Wolff and then attending one of the Candlelight Concerts in Denver. I love the intimacy of those concerts, and they always have banger line-ups! Sushi den would be on the list, as it’s my favorite restaurant along with dim sum at Star Kitchen.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband, AJ, is my biggest supporter. He is the one who really pushed me to pursue this business and loves being part of the process. We both studied art together at college, so when I’m drawing up designs at the breakfast table, he’s often right there with me, brainstorming and critiquing my work.
