We had the good fortune of connecting with Adam Amit and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Adam, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I’m a big believer in living an authentic life, which means to me, that you live in balance with your honest beliefs and desires. That’s super important whether you are getting married or photographing a marriage. As a couple you want to celebrate this momentous decision in a way that’s honest – and you want to spend it with a photographer who you are going to have a great time with. Couples want their photographer to be the same person the day of as they are on their initial phone call. So for me, being authentic to who I am – cheesy, sappy, totally in love with love, is one of the most important factors to my success. To be an elopement photographer, where you spend a lot of wedding days as the only person with the wedding couple, ya gotta really love love and want to be around it, and photograph it. You have to be passionate about what you do and why you do it. For my couple’s, and for myself, being the true authentic romantic version of me is of immense value to my business, and has propelled me towards continued success.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

I had a previous career as a public servant – I worked as a Legislative Director in the New York City Council and as a military officer in the New York Army National Guard. While I got to do a lot of important, impactful work, I was ultimately unfulfilled. So I decided to dive into learning how to make movies, because I absolutely love movies. After finishing my Masters degree and military service, I backpacked around the world for a while. While traveling I started off making a bunch of vlogs, which were all the rage at the time. That slowly morphed into photography as I found myself increasingly drawn to taking photos of people. No matter where I went or what I saw, and some of which are the most beautiful in the world, I only cared to take a photo if people were in it. After my travels I was applying for policy job in Denver, but all I could think about was photography and taking photos of people. So I said forget policy, I’m going to be a photographer. As for what type of photography, the answer was simple – I’m a cheeseball, a romantic, I love going to weddings, I love talking about weddings, I love love, so I have to be a wedding photographer! Eventually wedding photographer turned into adventure elopement photographer because it perfectly combined my favorite things – love, adventure, and intimate connections with people.

I’ve never had much of a fear of chasing after my dreams and passions. I’m an intrinsically motivated person, so if I know I need to do something, I go for it regardless of how daunting the task may seem. But learning to be a professional photographer, and to do it in a situation where you have to be ready all the time to capture one of the most important days of a person’s life, is quite challenging. The key to overcoming is to practice and keep pushing forward. I tried to learn as much as possible and push myself as far and as fast as possible, all with an eye on my main goal of serving my couples. They are first and foremost and this whole business is geared towards making their day as exceptional as they dream.

My couples connect with me because they can immediately sense the passion and love I bring to my job. That I photograph their day because it truly brings me so much joy. Couples need to vibe with their photographer but also know that the photographer cares. Really deeply cares. There’s nothing else I’d rather be doing. I’m living my dream and my dream is to serve my couples. I believe all my couples get that with me, and it’s what makes me unique.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Colorado has so so so much to offer, that a week long trip would probably not be enough to have as much fun as possible! If my best friend gave me a week to showcase the state, I’d try to pack in as much adventure as possible. We’d start in Denver because it’s the easiest to fly into, but we’d immediately go into the mountains. We’d start off driving through Breckenridge to head down south to the Sand Dunes. We’d play in the sand, go boarding at sunset, then stare at the stars filling the night sky. We’d then spend a day or two hiking in the Sangre Di Cristo wilderness, head over to Crested Butte and Gunnison, go rafting in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. We’d end with jeep rides and hikes through the San Juan mountains in the Southwest of the state. Visiting alpine lakes and stunning mountain ranges.

What makes Colorado one of the greatest places on earth is the sheer variety and scale of adventures. We’ve got amazing places all over the world, but very few have Sand Dunes and White capped mountain peaks, massive gorges and rolling green hills all in one spot. So I’d want to fully take advantage of that.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Building a business and achieving your goals is always a team effort, even if indirectly. I’m so grateful that being an elopement photographer has come with a truly communal industry where people are eager to help each other. The person who has best led that vibe is Maddie Mae of Adventure Instead. She’s fostered an environment where we all support each other. She launched a course on how to be an elopement photographer, that has been extremely helpful to myself and so so many others. She’s constantly updating the course, providing a tremendous amount of free content for anyone to access, and is just a wonderful person. She’s the best, and as often as I can I try to provide her and her team with the tremendous credit they deserve.
