We had the good fortune of connecting with Adam Eaton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Adam, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
There are so many strengths that can play into running a business and so many weaknesses that will play against you if you’re not aware of them. I have ample weaknesses, but thankfully some of these can be turned around in developing good habits. There are many habits that have added up and helped change my business and my life, but I’ll mention just a few here.

The first is waking up early. For me, getting time in the morning to sit and be helps set up each day for success. To be awake before others’ needs start pulling at your consciousness, before emails start streaming in, before phones start buzzing, has truly become an essential in my life and in my work.

Second is probably learning to be “unoffendable.” Much of what I do is sales – I’m networking, going to happy hours, calling, giving presentations, and more. This can be a tough gig. Choosing to not be offended by a “no” has been hugely helpful for me. An entrepreneur puts himself or herself out there every day through their business. Failures, mistakes, misunderstandings, and accidents are all going to happen. Accepting this, and even being prepared for it, has certainly helped set me up for success.

The final one I will mention is a gratitude practice. I have a tendency to focus on what is broken, what is not working well, what needs to be changed or trashed. In business, these items can scream at my attention from day to day, demanding to be tended to immediately. I have found a daily practice of gratitude can bend this curve in me and allows me to spread my focus across everything I need to accomplish from day to day, not just the broken pieces.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
At Next Door Photos we specialize in professional Real Estate photography and a comprehensive suite of other Real Estate marketing media. Being part of a larger network allows us to provide next day turnaround, affordable pricing, and products of the highest quality.

Realtors waste too much time and money waiting for photos to publish their listings. We can photograph listings the next day, guaranteed – so our clients can be free to list more. Being a part of the larger network allows us to serve clients up and down the Front Range, and our global editing partners allow us that next day delivery, year round.

NDP – NoCo will complete our 5th year of business here this summer, which is hard to believe. The Realtor community in Northern Colorado is so generous, and we have generally felt welcome since day one. It’s not without hardship or ups and downs – we make mistakes like everyone – but Real Estate is a relationship business. The longer we are around, the more we get to know prospective clients, and the more we get to serve them and their sellers.

In some way, I’d guess most entrepreneurs and business owners have learned to embrace struggle. I will speak just for myself and say that it is not natural for me to do so, but I have learned to welcome struggle. And am still learning to do so. It’s a practice, if you will. I’m better at it than I was 4 years ago, and I hope to be better at it by the end of this year.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
What a great question. Is it winter?

After getting them settled into their room at The Elizabeth Hotel (or more likely the travel trailer in our backyard….) we’d snag some breakfast downstairs at The Emporium. Stuffed and nourished, we’d enjoy a walk around Old Town Fort Collins with all the magic it holds. It may not all happen in one day, but some go-to spots in Old Town to visit over the week would be a stop in to Little Bird for some coffee and treats, a stroll up and down College – maybe popping in to stores like Sunday Supply Co., Topo Designs, The Cupboard, and Clothes Pony to name a few. A little something for everyone there. On other days we’d hit up The Regional (maybe for all night HH on Tuesdays!) and Little on Mountain. And of course there would be the brewery visits. Maybe too many brewery visits…

When we were tired of town, we’d head up and out to go cross country skiing. Maybe up at Cameron Pass, or head south to the St Vrain canyon. Or maybe snag some camping in Red Feather Lakes if it’s summer. If something closer was needed, we could enjoy Horsetooth Reservoir, or even just Spring Canyon Park! A trip up to Estes would probably be a must, and maybe even getting into The Park if we could.

I think that’s most of the run-around. The rest would just be hanging with the amazing family and friends that are here and also call Northern CO home.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are several people and even books that I could point to that have helped me along the way, but the number one spot is no competition – I owe so much to my wife, Abi. She has been with me through each up and down along the way, always in my corner ready to encourage and celebrate. Abi is my best friend, and I’m thankful to be on the journey with her.

I will also say a thank you to my friends and family who have never put me in a box, but rather encouraged and supported me along the way. Donald Miller’s “StoryBrand” and his Hero on a Mission workshop have also been instrumental in focussing my work to actually accomplish what I want to accomplish, and not just that which is right in front me.
