Meet Alex ‘AJ’ Johnson | Producer & Engineer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex ‘AJ’ Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex ‘AJ’, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
At the core of my business is a commitment to empowering artists—helping them transform their dreams from inception to reality as performing and touring musicians. I take on the greater financial risk by minimizing upfront costs, allowing artists to retain more of their earnings and reinvest in their craft. My focus is not just on building a business but on fostering sustainable careers for independent musicians, ensuring they have the resources and support to succeed. I believe that when artists thrive, the entire music community benefits, creating a ripple effect of inspiration, opportunity, and cultural enrichment.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My work isn’t just about making music—it’s about building careers and creating real opportunities for independent artists. What sets me apart is my commitment to bridging the gap between creative vision and sustainable success. I take on more risk upfront to ensure the artists I work with keep more in their pockets and have the freedom to grow. Seeing artists like Grayson Ratliff turn raw emotion into music that forms real communities is what excites me the most.
Getting to where I am today wasn’t easy. The music industry is tough, but I’ve learned that success isn’t just about talent—it’s about strategy, consistency, and surrounding yourself with the right people. Resilience and adaptability separate those who make it from those who don’t. My brand is about giving artists the tools and support to thrive on their own terms. The industry is changing, and the ones who take control of their future will shape its next chapter.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Who can come to Kansas City without diving into our world-famous BBQ? The first stop for any first-time visitor has to be Joe’s Kansas City—because nothing sets the tone for a KC experience like a Z-Man sandwich. And what better way to celebrate a great meal than by catching a local game? Whether it’s the world champion Chiefs at Arrowhead, a Royals game under the lights at Kauffman Stadium, or the electric energy of a KU Jayhawks basketball game, sports are at the heart of this city.
Kansas City thrives on music. From its deep jazz roots in the historic 18th & Vine District to the independent grind of Tech N9ne, music is always just around the corner. The Green Lady Lounge serves up late-night jazz in the most intimate setting, while Knuckleheads Saloon delivers raw, real performances across blues, rock, and country. And for those who love discovering the next big thing, the Crossroads Arts District is home to some of the best live shows in the Midwest.
Beyond the food and music, KC is full of hidden gems. A morning at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, an afternoon brewery tour at Boulevard Brewing Co., or a sunset walk at Liberty Memorial overlooking the skyline—there’s always something to experience. Whether you’re here for a weekend or a week, KC isn’t just a city you visit—it’s a city you feel.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to give a huge shoutout to Grayson Ratliff. What started as a working relationship—without ever even being in the same room—quickly evolved into spending weeks together, building his future and refining his artistry. His ability to capture raw emotion in his music is something rare; it transcends the digital world and creates a deep, authentic connection with listeners. Watching his music organically build a community of people who truly resonate with his sound has been incredible. Grayson’s dedication and talent remind me why I do what I do, and I’m proud to be part of his journey.
