We had the good fortune of connecting with Alicia Rau and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alicia, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risks can be scary and uncomfortable, but it plays a key role in growing as a person. I had to overcome my fear of failure and being seen before starting my business. Selling original designs and being independently funded, there was a lot of uncertainty. Instead of focusing on what could go wrong – I put my effort into building a brand that was true to my values.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Growing up fashion was everything. My mom and grandma encouraged me to be creative and got me sewing young. After high school, I attended college at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. Although it was what I always dreamed, after school it took me over 12 years to start my journey. It wasn’t until my Grandfathers passing in 2017 did I decide to take a leap into the unknown.
The hardest part of entering back into the world of fashion was my self doubt. My internal monologue tried to tell me that I was too old or it was too late. Pushing through the intrusive thoughts allowed me to open my self up to a new space creatively and I relearned how to trust myself and the process.
For me, the key to overcoming challenges is learning to look at every adversity or setback with love and grace. In the moment it can feel like the world is collapsing, but really it’s an opportunity to learn valuable lessons and grow. Always staying true to yourself is also important. So many people will try to give you a label or push their narrative. Never allow others perception of you to become who you are.
What sets Bête Noire apart from the rest is our message to always honor your authentic self. We foster community among the wanderers, the odd and colorful — those with attitude, individuality, and the desire to break free. We think differently, live unconventionally, and stand together as one. I’m so incredible proud of my journey and all it’s taught me. When I tell my story I always like to remind people that no matter your current path – you can never truly abandon your divine purpose. It’s never too late to start.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being an avid snowboarder I love Summit County. When friends come to visit, Breckenridge is usually our first stop. Staying at the Grand on Peak 8 is top tier, it offers so many amenities and a diverse crowd of people. Sancho Tacos, Piante’s Pizzeria, and Twist are at top on the list for Dinner, each one has vegan options. We always make a stop at Motherloaded Tavern for live music when cover band El Passo Lasso is playing pop punk hits. If we’re in the mood to be rowdy, Cecila’s nightclub is the spot. I’ve witnessed multiple dance battles there and the crowd and vibes are the best in town. We never forget to make a late night stop at Reddz for a quick bite before the night is over. When we make our way down to Denver, Blue sushi followed by a goth night at Milk Bar is a must.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Our customers, followers, and supporters. Thank you to all the Bête Babes out there. None of this would be possible without you.
