We had the good fortune of connecting with Allie Mounce, Clare Freeman, Katie Mars n/a and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Allie Mounce, Clare Freeman, Katie Mars, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
ALLIE: “I was tired of working for other people. I’ve worked for some terrible bosses, and I kept thinking “if that guy can do it, why can’t I?” I knew we had the skills to make it work, and that all that was really holding us back was fear of failure. “How hard could it be” has been the thought process behind most of my entrepreneurial decisions.”
CLARE:
“I was tired of renting and wanted to own, so-to-speak. I wanted more control of not just my day-to-day, but also the “who,” “what,” and “why” around what I was investing my time in.”
KATIE:
“The pandemic really changed my work mindset. I was tired of working for someone else’s bottom line, especially during a time when I worked harder than I ever had and had little to show for it. I knew I was a great employee, but felt so stuck. If I was the one with the skills my clients wanted, so why couldn’t I just do it on my own you know? It’s a scary jump that required a lot of planning (and an elopements to Vegas so I could get on my husband’s insurance, which I’m so thankful was an option). Haven’t looked back since! ”
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Pretty Useful Co. was founded in 2016 as a small goods collaboration between Allie Mounce and Clare Freeman that has grown into a creative studio serving brands large and small. Allie and Clare both quit their jobs in early 2020 to pursue building a studio full-time, and brought on Katie Mars as a third partner in early 2021. We have purposefully kept our operations small and nimble so we can best serve our clients, and only take on projects with clients we are excited about regardless of industry or budget. Basically we were tired of working for other people doing work we did not care about, knew we had the skills to make it work, and decided to jump in and see what happens. And so far, it’s been an incredibly rewarding experience for all of us and we can’t wait to see what’s next.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Pretty Useful Co. got it’s start at Creative Works in Memphis, TN, and that conference will always be special to us.
