We had the good fortune of connecting with Alyssa Dyane Boland and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alyssa Dyane, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
This is something I struggle with constantly. I have an almost nonexistent social life, and rarely take a day off. But creating is what I enjoy doing! When I’m not creating, I’m thinking about creating. I have been trying harder at listening to my body, and trying to test when I need it. Chainmaille is very physical. So I am working on being more conscious of giving my body time to test and heal.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I take ancient chainmaille techniques and use the. To create modern art and jewelry styles. I like bold designs. Sometimes it is a struggle staying true to my own aesthetic, and not bowing down to what I think might sell. With my fine art, I face many challenges. Chainmaille fine art is not something most people have seen. And with that, they don’t comprehend the process, and the sheer amount of effort and time that goes into each piece. Or even the cost of materials for one art piece. It is also a medium that does not translate as well looking at photos online. It is best viewed, and touched, in person to truly appreciate the entire piece. But even with all those struggles, it is something I love to do. I enjoy the process. When I’m not weaving chainmaille, I’m thinking about it. My best advice is to be bold, as stay true to yourself.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am so lucky to be living in Salida, Colorado. The art scene here is amazing. When I have visitors, I take them through all the art galleries, and introduce them to ad many of our local artists as possible. A riverside picnic is usually a must. It’s so easy to grab a bag of sandwiches from Sweetie’s and find a great place to watch the activity on the Arkansas. During the summer months, free outdoor concerts at Riverside Park are always on the plan. The Steamplant has a calendar full of unique activities and art events. But by far, my favorite place in town to take people is the Fun Street Arcade. There is nothing better than an afternoon spent playing old school video games and pinball with friends.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Choosing a life as a professional artist is difficult. I could not do it without the emotional support of my mother. As an artist, your work gets so entwined in your sense of identity. Then come the doubts of “is it good enough”. We all need that cheerleader in the corner, telling us we can do it. That we are good enough. And reminding us to just be ourselves.
