We had the good fortune of connecting with Amanda Failla-Tjarks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amanda, is there something you believe many others might not?
While having a well thought out plan is important, I firmly believe just starting may be even more important. Starting a business is wildly personal and different for everyone. You only truly know and understand what you need to do for your own business by doing it and learning as you go. Almost every single day I learn something new and often times they are things that I would not have been able to know without just doing and trying different things.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Albany and Avers is a curated vintage and pre-owned clothing shop located in the heart of Omaha’s Historic Dundee neighborhood. As a woman-owned business, they are dedicated to celebrating the beauty of individuality, size inclusivity, and self-expression. They believe that no two bodies are the same, and strive to source unique and high-quality pieces from past decades to bring joy to their shoppers’ closets.

As a safe space for all, particularly members of the LGBTQ+ community, Albany and Avers is committed to creating a welcoming environment for everyone. The shop is open every Friday-Sunday, or by appointment during the week. New pieces drop each week and visitors can connect with the community through regular events, including curated pop-ups showcasing local artists and small businesses.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First, when they arrive I would take them to Dundee, the charming neighborhood in Omaha that is truly the dream neighborhood – it’s a walkable neighborhood filled with charming architecture and amazing small businesses – from coffee shops, to amazing restaurants, bars, and more. We’d start with dinner at Ooh-de-Lally, and then head over to Pagetuners Lounge to hear local music or poetry by local artists.

Next, we we would head to the Blackstone neighborhood and grab a cocktail at The Cottonwood Hotel, and hang out and chat until the end of the night.

The next day, we’d wake up early and go for a morning run with the Askarben Run Club. We’d run through the Elmwood Park and Dundee – and turning back to enjoy breakfast at one of the cute cafes.

Then, we’d head downtown to the Omaha Farmer’s Market. I absolutely adore Farmer’s Markets and love looking at the local flowers, produce, and locally made goods. Then, we’d bring the dogs to The Omaha Dog Bar and enjoy some snacks while watching the dogs play and enjoy themselves romp around with other dogs.

Then, we’d goto Julia M Illustrates for an art class by her or one of her amazing artists. They have a range or curated classes that make even the least creative people feel artistic.

Next, we’d goto Little Bohemia and grab a drink at Tiny Bar. This bar holds a special place in my heart as it was there when I found my first storefront in Omaha – plus, the vibes and drinks are incredible.

Then, we’d end the evening at Blue Sushi in the Old Market – followed by ice cream at Coneflower in Millwork.

The next day, we’d wake up and get Archetype coffee and head to the Omaha Zoo. The Omaha Zoo is so fun, regardless of how many times you’ve been. So great for out of towners who may be skeptical of just how great an Omaha zoo can really be.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First, I would give credit to my dad. I am very thankful to have been raised by a strong, Italian man because that taught me from a very young age to speak up for what I want and what I believe it, and above all, not to take “no” for an answer. He taught me confidence from an age when I didn’t even understand what confidence was.

My husband, Erick has also offered unwavering support from day one. He pushed me to quit my corporate job, make the leap, and go after my dreams. He helps me daily as I problem solve any and all ideas and problems. He hypes me up and truly cares about Albany and Avers as much as I do.
