We had the good fortune of connecting with Amanda O’Mara and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amanda, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
Pay attention and act on what makes you uncomfortable. So often we don’t do something because we’d rather stay in our comfort zones, but that is not where growth happens. It’s the messy and unsexy parts that have helped me grow exponentially. Embrace and love on fear and failure; learn to enjoy the process no matter what curve balls are thrown your way. Think of it like a slingshot…when you’re on the ‘down,’ you’re about to propelled further. The quicker you fail, the closer you are to success.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Today I am a Business Coach. Damn, that feels good to say. I help Fitness Coaches start their own online fitness business.

For over a decade, I slang drinks behind the bar and served fine wine and steaks to pay the bills. For years, I would catch myself daydreaming of a life of fitness and freedom, but had no idea how until I discovered Online Fitness Coaching.

That was it! With time, I got my NASM Certified Personal Training and Nutrition Certifications. I worked in a private gym while slowly making my transition to the big and unknown online space.

Freaked out was an understatement. You see, starting an online business forces you to face your deepest fears – fear of rejection, imposter syndrome, perfectionism, people pleasing, what if I fail? In all realness, shit hit the fan for me. A lot of trauma surfaced and therapy became a weekly thing. But I kept going…

I started to prioritize my mindset routine and journaling and overcoming one limiting belief at a time.

Then it happened! After working with a business coach, the floodgates opened. Clients started rolling in, I quit my jobs and I was working from my laptop full-time. Then began a continued nonlinear and surreal journey of growth in all areas of my life.

I started getting questions from other Fitness Coaches on how I made it and realized a need and a deep love to teach the business side as well. Within a few short months, Impact Coach Academy was born giving the roadmap, love and support for Fitness Coaches starting an online business.

Record months were hit, we bought our dream home in the CO mountains and a small team was coming together, but then…

On October 21st, at approximately 6:30pm, I looked up and out my windows to see fire all around me. I saw our neighbors houses on fire and a wave of flames flying towards me. I grabbed my dog and ran as fast as I could to my car. After flooring it, I saw my life flash before me as trees started falling everywhere. One tree rammed up into my radiator and engine. I was able to get a few miles down the road until my car broke down on the side of the road.

In shock, I saw the fire approaching again but my husband got to us out just in time.

We lost everything…our home, our neighbors, our trees, our clothes, and our sanctuary. Everything we worked so hard for was turned to ash in a blink of an eye. FEMA declared it a natural wildfire disaster after 500 homes were burnt to the ground. Mentally I couldn’t function…I was stuck in fight or flight mode. The business started to fall apart or take a huge pause in taking any clients.

But I kept going…

After putting my mindset first again, the doors reopened for Impact Coach Academy 3 months after the fire. It came back better than ever before. As for the house, it is currently being rebuilt and we are slowly getting our lives back.

I share this story to share hope. There is so much pain and trauma that holds people back from their true potential, but in order to heal you have to feel. The cards we’ve been handed in life are a gift. Everything I have been through and overcome, I can now help someone else and you can too.

You are capable of so much more than you think you are. This is what I stand for – to help others peel back layers to reveal their true and authentic self. When you can step into this superpower, oh the places you will go.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in small town in the beautiful Colorado mountains. I’d choose campfires and hiking over night clubbing any day of the week. I thrive off of 1:1 or small group settings, getting outside and being active and enjoying a glass of wine on the patio or beer at the local dive bar. This is how I would show my best friend the best time ever.

Slowing down to just be chill and present but also getting outside for a good hike, some boating or ripping up some fresh powder on a snowmobile.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to dedicate this to my husband, Mike McShane. He has been my biggest cheerleader from the beginning and believed in me even on my darkest days. Thank you for always seeing my light, my worth and what I’m truly capable of.
